A new artificial intelligence supercomputer will feature half a million chips and be powered by nuclear energy
Company British Fluidstack signed a memorandum of understanding with the French government to build an artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer.
The announcement was made during the AI Action Summit in Paris, attended by President Emmanuel Macron. The project will have an investment of US$ 10,3 billion.
Strategic agreement for AI in France
The memorandum was signed by key figures in the French government: the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Eric Lombard, and the Minister of Industry and Energy, Marc Feracci. On Fluidstack’s side, the company’s co-founder and president, César Maklary, made the commitment official.

The proposal is to transform France into a global reference in AI computing, taking advantage of the clean energy and abundant in the country. According to Fluidstack, the supercomputer will use up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of computing power dedicated exclusively to AI.
Infrastructure and sustainable energy
The first phase of the project foresees the installation of around 500.000 state-of-the-art AI chips. The difference is not in the energy supply: the entire operation will be powered by decarbonized electricity, predominantly nuclear, with the reuse of waste heat for greater energy efficiency.
The load supply will be provided by RTE, the French national energy distribution company. The fast connection to the grid will allow the supercomputer to operate without interruptions, ensuring high performance for training advanced AI models.
Fluidstack plans to expand capacity beyond 1 GW by 2028, cementing France as a powerhouse in AI infrastructure.
Leadership in innovation and digital sovereignty
The partnership between Fluidstack and the French government is part of the country’s strategy to strengthen its digital sovereignty and energy security. According to César Maklary, the project will help contribute to the next generation of innovations in artificial intelligence.
On LinkedIn, the executive stated that France, in the next decade, will stop exporting electricity to export intelligence, reinforcing the country's commitment to AI.
French government support
In his speech at the AI Action Summit, President Macron highlighted that France already occupies a leading position in artificial intelligence, investing in talent training and technological development since 2017.
"France is the leading European country in artificial intelligence. Since 2017, we have trained our talents, developed our research and strengthened our key players in health, space, defense and large language models.".
Economic impact and new business
The project also promises to generate thousands of investments in AI infrastructure, research and high-performance computing.
Fluidstack believes that, in addition to the technological revolution, the supercomputer will bring economic benefits and consolidate France as a global reference in the sector.
