Innovative technology allows cyclists to monitor their bicycle tire pressure in real time, improving performance and safety while cycling

Correct tire pressure is a crucial factor in the performance of mountain bikes. A few psi more or less can directly influence the financial security of pedaling, and this is where the Outrider sensor shines.

Developed by a startup from Colorado, in the United States, Outrider promises to make cyclists' lives easier by offering real-time monitoring of tire pressure, directly from inside tubeless tires.

How does Outrider work?

The device is a flexible rectangular strip with a central hole for the valve stem to pass through. During installation, it is positioned between the base of the stem and the rubber seal on the rim. An important point is that the rim must have a minimum internal width of 19 mm to accommodate both the sensor and the tire beads.

With the Outrider properly installed, tire pressure readings are transmitted in real time to a Garmin device using the ANT+ wireless protocol. This functionality is useful for cyclists who want to closely monitor tire conditions to ensure optimal performance.

Bicycle Sensor Features

The Outrider is designed to be precise and discreet:

  • Precision: The sensor is capable of measuring pressure with an accuracy of up to ±0,7% in ranges from 0 to 39 psi, and ±1,4% in ranges from 40 to 85 psi. Accuracy is 0,1 psi.
  • Weight: Weighing only 3,5g, it is a lightweight device that does not alter the performance of the bike.
  • Battery: Uses a CR1225 coin-type lithium battery, with an estimated lifespan of two years of use.
  • Waterproof: The Outrider's electronics are fully sealed to resist moisture and harsh conditions.

Advantages of using Outrider

The use of tire pressure sensors provides several benefits for cyclists of different experience levels:

  1. Continuous monitoring: The cyclist can view tire pressure in real time on their Garmin device. This ensures accurate and immediate adjustments when necessary.
  2. Custom alert: The app can issue automatic alerts if the pressure drops below a pre-defined level, preventing problems such as punctures or falls.
  3. Security and performance: Maintaining the correct pressure contributes to better grip and stability of the bike, which is essential to avoid accidents on trails or challenging terrain.

Expansion prospects

Currently, the Outrider is only compatible with Garmin cyclometers. However, the company has already announced that it is working to expand compatibility to other devices, which should attract even more fans of the technology. This flexibility in adapting to different platforms will be a strong point in its acceptance in the market.

The Outrider sensor project is being funded through a Kickstarter campaign, which highlights the growing interest in technological solutions aimed at adventure sports.

With an affordable investment and easy installation, this technology has the potential to become an indispensable item for cyclists looking for safety and practicality on their journeys.

Therefore, for those who take their cycling seriously and are looking for improvements in terms of control and efficiency, the Outrider emerges as an innovative and highly promising tool.
