Infrastructure works are essential for the development and integration of regions. In Maranhão, a new bridge is beginning to be built after the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek bridge last year.
O National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) has begun emergency construction of a new bridge over the Tocantins River, on BR-226, between Maranhão and Tocantins. The project connects the municipalities of Aguiarnópolis (TO) and Estreito (MA) and is estimated to be completed in one year.

Work progress
The initial phase is already underway, with the mechanized removal of the debris from the old Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge.
The teams began mechanized excavations to install the support foundations on the side of the municipality of Estreito.
Work is also ongoing on installing the construction site and mobilizing equipment and personnel.
The foundation footings will be poured on site and then the pillars will be erected. With these steps in progress, DNIT is following the established schedule, with the new bridge expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The collapse of the old bridge
The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge collapsed on December 22, 2024, causing a tragedy.
The structure, 533 meters long, gave way at around 14:50 pm, resulting in the fall of several vehicles, including trucks, cars and motorcycles, into the Tocantins River.
Opened in 1961, the bridge was an essential link between Maranhão and Tocantins, connecting highways BR-226 and BR-230.
Before the collapse, reports indicated signs of wear and tear on the structure, and there were plans for its renovation, which were not completed in time.
