New port in SC will have 4 piers, 450 meters of seafront and capacity to export grains, fertilizers and fuels; Coamo terminal promises to transform Brazilian logistics.
Coamo Agroindustrial Cooperativa, the largest agricultural cooperative in Latin America, announced its plans to build a new port in Santa Catarina, more precisely in Itapoá, during the “Best of Agribusiness 2024” awards ceremony, promoted by Globo Rural. The initiative reflects the cooperative’s strategy to expand its port infrastructure and meet the growing demand for exports.
According to José Aroldo Gallassini, chairman of the board of directors of Coamo, the investment is urgent. “We are going to invest there because we have a great need for ports. Last year, we exported through six ports, so we are going to invest,” Gallassini said during the event. The construction of the port in Itapoá is in the environmental licensing phase and is considered a milestone in planning strategic of the cooperative.
Structure and impact of the new port in SC
The planned maritime terminal will have four berthing piers, with a 450-meter seafront and a draft of 18,5 meters. The infrastructure will be used for operations with grains, fertilizers, liquid fuels and LPG, moving up to 10 million tons per year when fully operational. The model adopted will be that of a Private Use Terminal (TUP), reinforcing the strategic nature of the construction of the port in Itapoá.

The location of the new port in SC is a significant differentiator, given its proximity to Porto Itapoá, a private terminal in operation since 2011. In addition, Coamo, headquartered in Campo Mourão (PR), has 115 receiving units in 75 municipalities in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso do Sul, facilitating logistics for the terminal.
Advances in the licensing process
The request for a preliminary environmental license was submitted to the Environmental Institute (IMA) in June and is currently under analysis. The cooperative is awaiting approval to move on to the next stage, which involves submitting an environmental impact study. With global revenues of R$30,3 billion in 2023, Coamo is reinforcing its leading role in the sector with long-term investments such as the new port in Santa Catarina.
This initiative consolidates Coamo's leadership in agribusiness and demonstrates its commitment to sustainable and strategic development, placing the new port in SC as a key piece to boost competitiveness in Brazilian exports.
