The long-awaited Intercity Train (TIC) project is becoming a reality! With an impressive investment of R$15 billion, it will connect São Paulo to Baixada Santista in just 1h30, generating no less than 13 thousand jobs!

The long-awaited project of Intercity Train (TIC) between Sao Paulo and Baixada Santista finally begins to take shape and promises to revolutionize rail transport in the state.

The proposal, which aims to serve more than 1,8 million passengers per year, will have a robust investment of $ 15 billion and has the potential to generate around 13 thousand direct jobs during its execution.

A connection between the capital of São Paulo and the Baixada Santista region will be made in just 1h30, making life easier for millions of people who, every day, face long traffic jams to travel between the two locations.

Several route options are being evaluated

Among the route options that are being analyzed, the first alternative is to use the Serra do Mar railway, which already connects the Port of Santos to São Paulo.

This is the most direct route and therefore the fastest.

However, for this plan to become a reality, it will require a agreement with the concessionaire responsible for the section, which can be challenging in terms of negotiation and additional costs.

The second option involves the construction of a new connection in Mongaguá, which would require a route that went around the mountain range, an area with a lower slope, facilitating the implementation of a railway route.

For this alternative, the train would need to leave from Pinheiros Station, in Sao Paulo.

The construction of this new line could represent a major step forward, but it will also require considerable investment in infrastructure and analysis of the project's feasibility.

The third proposed option contemplates the use of the right-of-way of the Imigrantes highway, which also connects the city of São Paulo to Baixada Santista.

Although this is a potentially viable alternative, using an existing highway could require significant adaptations to accommodate the railway system, increasing the cost and construction time.

Timeline and outlook for the project

This dream of seeing a train connecting São Paulo to Baixada Santista is not something new.

The demand for a more efficient and faster means of transport between these two locations is old, and has been a long-standing demand from the population that suffers from the intense traffic on the region's highways.

A project development officially started in February 2024, and the program gained greater attention with the endorsement of the State Investment Partnerships Program São Paulo (PPI-SP), which formally initiated the process.

According to the stipulated schedule, the construction project should be completed in 2th quarter of 2026, with the completion of the initial stages scheduled for the end of 2025.

O Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is leading the development phase, bringing its expertise to ensure that the project meets international standards of quality and sustainability.

It is expected that, throughout the development, adaptations will be made according to the progress of the works and new feasibility analyses.

Economic impact and benefits for the region

The construction of the Intercity Train not only promises to transform transport logistics between São Paulo and Baixada Santista, but will also have a considerable economic impact on the region.

With 13 thousand new jobs generated, the work will boost several sectors, such as civil construction, logistics and maintenance, promoting economic growth both in the capital and in Baixada Santista.

Furthermore, agility in transportation between the two regions can attract more tourists and facilitate the movement of workers, students and businesspeople, boosting local trade and tourism.

A reduction of traffic on highways It will also help to reduce pollution and the time spent commuting, bringing improvements to the population's quality of life.

The importance of the Intercity Train for urban mobility

The Intercity Train project represents a milestone in urban mobility in the state of São Paulo.

With the population of São Paulo and Baixada Santista growing steadily, the demand for faster, more sustainable and efficient transport solutions has never been higher.

O ICT It appears as a response to this need, offering a transport alternative that will be able to serve a large number of passengers in a short time.

With the implementation of the train, it is expected relieve the road system and offer a safer and more comfortable option for those who need to travel between the two regions.

A reducing congestion will be one of the biggest benefits for drivers, especially on the saturated highways that have been a constant concern for years.

Promising future: the impact of the Intercity Train on mobility in São Paulo

As the project progresses, it is possible that new solutions for rail transport will emerge over the years.

The Intercity Train can serve as a model for other projects integration between different metropolitan regions of Brazil, positively impacting urban mobility in the country.

The expectation is that the work will be completed within the stipulated schedule and that the train inauguration happen in the near future, benefiting millions of passengers who depend on more efficient and quality transportation.

In summary, the Intercity Train project not only promises to connect São Paulo to Baixada Santista quickly and efficiently, but will also be responsible for generating thousands of jobs and stimulating the local economy, with lasting benefits for the population of the capital and the coastal region.
