The oldest pier in the Port of Rio de Janeiro will be modernized
Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) started the bidding process for the expansion and modernization of Cais da Gamboa, the oldest section of the Port of Rio de Janeiro, inaugurated in 1910. The works involve investments of around R$ 195 million and will begin in 2021, with completion expected one year after the winning company is hired. The call notice can be found on the website of the CDRJ.

The structural work will include a 600-meter stretch of the Gamboa Wharf between bollards 100 and 124, and will allow for the deepening of the berths, also enabling operations with larger ships.
According to the Superintendent of Engineering at CDRJ, Roberto Catalão, the studies already carried out confirm the technical, socioeconomic, financial and environmental viability of this intervention. He said that the modernization “will not modify the current conditions of the environment and will maintain the basic characteristics of the existing pier”.

Renovation and modernization of the oldest port in Rio de Janeiro
Catalão explained that the structure of this section of Cais da Gamboa was designed and built with the techniques available at the time, at the beginning of the 20th century, for a draft of about nine meters. “This depth no longer meets most modern ships, which need at least 13,5 meters,” he said, adding that in order to increase this operational draft, “it is necessary to modernize the foundations and original structures of the pier, which would not support a dredge”.
Attractiveness in the port of RJ
The Director of Port Management at CDRJ, Mario Povia, informed that after the execution of the works to modernize the pier, the company intends to dredge the stretch. the increase in the operational draft of this area, which will now receive larger ships, allowing the optimization of the use of an infrastructure that is fundamental for the Port of Rio de Janeiro”.
With the dredging, Povia said that the Port will be able to capture new cargo and new navigation lines, “giving ballast to other conquests of the port cluster, such as the installation of the Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS), the introduction of the draft dynamic and nocturnal navigation in the access channel, reducing operating costs due to a significant increase in efficiency”. A port cluster consists of all activities related to the arrival of ships and cargo in the port region.
In the opinion of the superintendent of Port Management for Rio de Janeiro and Niterói, Leandro Lima, this section of Cais da Gamboa has a great vocation for handling various types of general cargo and bulk, such as wheat, pig iron, zinc concentrate, support cargo for offshore activities, among others.
“With the modernization of the pier and the deepening of the waterway access, this cargo mix will be more varied and profitable, and could even double the demand”, said Lima.
