Fortescue's green hydrogen megaproject No. Pecem Complex advances with billion-dollar investments.

On February 4 (Tuesday), a delegation from Fortescue Latin America visited representatives of the Government of Ceará and the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex with the aim of discussing cooperation guidelines and advancing the viability of a Fortescue hydrogen megaproject. The project in the Pecém Complex promises to receive billions in investments and boost the local economy.

Fortescue megaproject receives R$20 billion in investment

Present at the meeting were Governor Elmano de Freitas, the Executive Secretary of Energy and Telecommunications, Dickson Araújo de Oliveira, the president of the Pecém Complex, Max Quintino and the president of Export Processing Zone (ZPE Ceara) Fabio Feijó.

The company is currently developing the most advanced green hydrogen and ammonia project in Brazil at the Pecém Complex, with the capacity to produce 175 thousand tons of fuel per year, equivalent to 0,9 million tons of ammonia), with total investments of approximately R$20 billion, subject to a final investment decision.

Once operational, each tonne of green hydrogen produced at Fortescue's megaproject will prevent emissions of around 12 tonnes of CO2.

The project in the Pecém Complex is structural and will contribute to the green neo-industrialization of Brazil and the world. To this end, the company is working to ensure the necessary regulations and infrastructure that are transforming the state into a strategic hub for the energy transition.

Fortescue continues negotiations to move forward with hiring local services

Fortescue representatives present at the visit include the Head of Latin America, Enrique García, Manager of Government, Communities and Communications for Latin America, Sebastían Delgui, Legal Manager for Latin America, Fernando Rizzi, Project Director Pecém Christian Mantilla and Country Manager of Fortescue Brazil, Luis Viga.

According to Sebastián Delgui, Manager of Government, Communities and Communications for Latin America, Fortescue’s presence in the Pecém Complex reinforces the company’s commitment to Fortescue’s green hydrogen megaproject, as well as its focus on sustainable development and strengthening the local economy. The company continues to work in partnership with the Port of Pecém to ensure the project’s progress.

Currently, Fortescue's megaproject is receiving final adjustments to the engineering project, which will be essential before starting the preparation of the Green Hydrogen plant area, complying with all socio-environmental standards.

The company is discussing the details of the project with current and potential suppliers, with billion-dollar investments, in order to continue moving forward with the contracting of local products and services required for its construction.

Fortescue's green hydrogen megaproject promises to create thousands of new jobs

According to Governor Elmano de Freitas, the project in the Pecém Complex, in addition to boosting the neo-industrialization process, will be responsible for generating 5 jobs during construction. The government continues to work to ensure that the state becomes a H2V hub.

In October 2024, the Brazilian government selected Fortescue's green hydrogen megaproject for the Brazil Climate and Ecological Transformation Investment Platform (BIP), which will connect energy transition ventures with sources of financing.

Also in October, the National Council of Export Processing Zones (CZPE) approved Fortescue's project in Sector 2 of the Pecém Completox Export Processing Zone (ZPE). The company also has a license from the environmental authority of the State of Ceará, Semace, to begin work on preparing the land.
