With the gas power generation system, PetroRio will reduce its CO2 emissions and diesel consumption on platforms
A new energy production system was inaugurated at FPSO Bravo by PetroRio, installed in the Polvo and Tubarão Martelo fields, both located in the Campos Basin. The generation of electricity in the system will now be done with natural gas produced at the pole itself, to replace the use of diesel. From the decrease in gas combustion in the unit's flare and the consumption of diesel, which is very present on the platforms, as well as the reduction in logistics related to the distribution of this fuel, the new energy system has a great premise of environmental gains.

According to information from the oil company PetroRio, the website PetroNotícias disclosed that the drop in direct consumption of diesel oil will be approximately 60 liters per day. In addition, she reiterates that the suspension of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will correspond to the planting of around 30 trees. The change in the gas treatment and compression module happened without the need to stop production. The initiative only became viable due to the tieback between the two camps, which was finalized in July 2021.
In this regard, Francilmar Fernandes, Director of Operations at PetroRio, states: “With the tieback between Polvo and Tubarão Martelo, PetroRio consolidated the generation of electricity from the two fields into a single FPSO, Bravo. Together, the fields consumed around 80 liters of diesel per day. With the use of the gas produced in the field, which was not used before, the expectation is to supply 80% of this demand with great environmental and financial benefits”.

Then, the director added that this adaptation was the final phase of the interconnection project of the Polvo and Tubarão Martelo units. After the tieback between the fields and the use of natural gas for energy production, PetroRio was able to achieve the goals of the so-called “Project Phoenix”, which was launched by the oil company in July last year. For the time being, as a result, the company has already achieved a reduction in the pole's lifting cost to less than US$ 12 per barrel.
Thus, the reduction in the complex's costs makes it possible for a greater amount of oil to be returned to the reservoirs over a longer period and directly affects the significant reduction in emissions. The economic life of PetroRio's two assets was extended until 2037, which corresponds to an increase of 15 years and an addition of 40 million barrels to the Polvo Field stockpile. “It will be another 15 years generating jobs and royalties for the states and municipalities involved”, concludes director Fernandes.
PetroRio soars and increases oil production by 19% in 2021
PetroRio released last Thursday night, January 6, preliminary data on its oil and gas production during the year 2021. As described in the report, the oil company ended the period with 31.615 barrels of oil equivalent extracted daily. The volume is equivalent to a growth of about 19% compared to the figures for 2020 – the year in which PetroRio produced 26.569 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
