Wave energy: technology rises to new levels with an unprecedented feat in Portugal

The wave energy gave one significant leap in Portugal, with Eco Wave Power preparing to build its first megawatt-scale installation. This advance promises to revolutionize the production of clean and sustainable energy.

If you think you've seen it all when it comes to renewable energy, it's time to rethink. Eco Wave Power, a Portuguese company, is raising the game of wave energy to a new level. For more than a decade, they have been perfecting their system that turns wave motion into electricity, and now they are ready for a megawatt-scale installation.

Wave energy to a new level

The basics of the system haven't changed much: floats attached to coastal structures move with the waves, activating hydraulic pistons that compress fluid and generate energy. The beauty of this technology is its ability to operate 24 hours a day and adapt to adverse conditions, with floats that can be raised in storms, ensuring safety and efficiency.

Eco Wave Power shows service

This is not the first time that Eco Wave Power shows service. In 2016, Gibraltar was home to the first grid-connected facility, which operated for six years before being moved to a project in the United States. Israel also joined the dance with a grid-connected facility at Jaffa Port last year. And there's more to come: Turkey signed an agreement for a 77 MW station, but it's Porto, in northern Portugal, that's stealing the show with the first megawatt project.

The big step in Portugal

Announced in 2020, the Portuguese project finally received the green light in March this year. Eco Wave Power founder and CEO Inna Bravermann celebrated the official start of construction of the first 1 MW commercial station. And it doesn't stop there: the site will also house a museum and educational center for wave energy, the first of its kind in the world.

This innovative space will be located below the seawall, open to the public and will serve as a hub for education and awareness about the wave energy. Construction is expected to begin within the next two years, with ambitious plans to expand to four sites, reaching a maximum capacity of 20 megawatts.

Wave energy has enormous potential

Now, you can't just applaud without criticizing, right? A wave energy It has enormous potential, but we need to keep an eye on the challenges. Maintenance and installation are sold as simple, but the truth is that operating in maritime environments always brings surprises. So, will this new phase really deliver everything it promises?

The project has already suffered delays, with approval only coming in 2023, even after the announcement in 2020. Expectations are high, and Eco Wave Power needs to show that it can overcome the challenges and maintain financial and operational sustainability in the long term.

Portugal is on the right path to lead a new era in clean energy production to wave energy. Eco Wave Power's unprecedented achievement promises not only to revolutionize the sector, but also to educate and inspire future generations. With a critical eye and another on the future, we will follow this journey closely and hope that the waves bring good winds to the energy market.
