What to expect from the new subway in SP?
The program "Sao Paulo on Tracks” brings together more than 40 projects aimed at transporting passengers and cargo by rail. Among them, nine have already been qualified and are ready to be implemented. This includes the construction of new subway lines, such as Lines 19-Celeste and 20-Rosa, which promise to improve mobility in the capital.
The new subway in SP is one of Tarcísio de Freitas' big bets to ease traffic on the main avenues and offer a fast and efficient alternative for the people of São Paulo. The expansion of the subway network includes the implementation of Intercity Trains (TICs), Light Rail Vehicles (VLTs) and urban trains, which together add up to a estimated investment of R$ 194 billion.

Tarcísio de Freitas and the future of transportation in SP
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas has made it clear that the future of transportation in São Paulo depends on rails. During the launch of the program, he highlighted the importance of reviving rail transportation in the state, which was once one of the most advanced in the country.
“The state of São Paulo has grown and its large cities were born along the tracks. There is a great effort by the State Government to resume the Services railway, which is urgent and important”, said Tarcísio.
This strategic vision not only aims to improve urban mobility, but also offers a sustainable solution to congestion on increasingly saturated highways. The expectation is that, once the projects are completed, the new metro in São Paulo will become one of the main travel options for millions of people every day.

Among the new features of “São Paulo on the Rails”, the new subway lines deserve special mention. Line 19-Celeste and Line 20-Rosa are among the most eagerly awaited projects by São Paulo residents. The expansion of these lines will serve regions that, until now, were poorly connected by the public transportation network, providing relief for those who face long daily commutes.
In addition to the new lines, the program also includes the expansion of existing lines, such as Line 2-Green and Line 4-Yellow. This means more stations, more integration options and, of course, a more robust network to support the growing number of users.
VLTs and intercity trains
Tarcísio de Freitas' megaproject is not limited to the subway. The program also includes the implementation of Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) and Intercity Trains (TICs), which will connect the capital with other important cities in the state, such as Campinas, Sorocaba and São José dos Campos.
These TICs will be essential for integrating Greater São Paulo with other regions, facilitating the daily commute of thousands of people who work in the capital but live in nearby cities. The TIC Eixo Norte, for example, will connect São Paulo to Campinas, while the TIC Eixo Oeste will connect São Paulo to Sorocaba.
Megaproject generates thousands of jobs in São Paulo
The numbers behind this megaproject are impressive. In addition to the R$190 billion earmarked for the construction and expansion of the lines, the new subway in SP and the other “São Paulo on Rails” projects are expected to generate thousands of jobs direct and indirect. In 2024 alone, more than 8.478 new workers were hired to work on the subway expansion works.
Investments in a new subway line in SP not only improve the state's transport infrastructure, but also boost the local economy, with the generation of jobs and increased demand for services and products related to civil construction and engineering.
Less time wasted in traffic
Tarcísio de Freitas’ megaproject for the new metro line in São Paulo and the expansion of the metro-rail network is, without a doubt, one of the most ambitious initiatives ever seen in the state. With a clear vision for the future and a strong commitment to sustainable mobility, São Paulo is taking great strides towards becoming an even more connected and efficient city.
For the people of São Paulo, this means more than just new subway lines. It means a future with a better quality of life, less time wasted in traffic and a city that moves more intelligently.
