The recently completed dredging work made it possible to increase the draft of the Port of Recife and, with that, the complex will be able to receive even larger ships for cargo handling, making its growth in these operations even greater.
The Port of Recife, located in the state of Pernambuco, received approval for the bathymetry of the recently completed dredging work in its berths, with the assessment carried out by the CHM (Centro Hidroográfica da Marinha), last Thursday, (14/07 ), and celebrated the completion of the works. With the new maximum draft in the complex Pernambuco, cargo handling, which has already been growing sharply in recent months, could become even more expressive and receive even larger ships in the coming months.
Dredging works to increase the draft of the Port of Recife are completed and the complex takes advantage of the new depth to receive new ships
The CHM finalized the evaluation of the dredging works in the berths of the Port of Recife and approved the bathymetry of the process, thus guaranteeing the complete conclusion of the project to expand the draft of the complex. Thus, the Pernambuco port has an even greater depth for the navigation of ships in cargo handling operations and should take advantage of the scenario to expand activities in the segment.
Thus, the final report regarding the dredging works in the Port of Recife indicates that berths 00 and 01 achieved a depth mark of 10 meters; the stretch between berths 02 and 06 reached 11 meters; and the depth between berths 07 and 09 increased to eight meters. In addition, according to data from the CHM itself, the maximum draft of these berths, with the completion of the dredging works, could reach 12,60 m, 13,60 m and 10,6 m, respectively, during times of high tide.

The completion of the dredging works was the major milestone in the administration of the president of the Port of Recife, José Lindoso, who will pass on his position to Tito Lívio Morais during the next week. In addition, Lindoso was responsible for Liquiport's investments in the Port of Recife, which intends to assemble a new battery of seven silos for handling barley malt. In this way, the executive's management brought to the Pernambuco complex a strong perspective of growth in cargo handling.
Cargo handling has a significant increase in the port complex and dredging of the complex will make it possible to expand these numbers with large ships
Even before the completion of the dredging works at the Port of Recife, the movement of cargo in the complex was already showing a strong growth and, only during the month of June, the port had an increase of 90,24% in the movement, thus marking the most productive June of the past three years. During this period, a total of 31 ships passed through the capital of Pernambuco and handled 109.625 tons of products, a very significant number compared to the 57.625 tons of 2021.
Among the main products moved in the Pernambuco complex, the highlights are wheat, soda ash, barley malt and fertilizers. Thus, José Lindoso, president of the Port of Recife, commented that “This growth in fertilizers out of season is associated with the world scenario, the war and the difficulty of supplying the product. As the importer cannot fail to serve his customers, they have moved a greater amount of fertilizers to guarantee stock”.
Beverage companies have been heavily using barley malt and soda ash for their productions and, therefore, the product closed June with a growth of 80,9%, moving 19.904 tons. Now, with the completion of the dredging works, even larger ships will arrive at the complex and will allow for an increase in this number.
