A Spanish initiative aims to attract remote workers to the Ambroz Valley in Extremadura by offering financial incentives to revitalize the region.
A Spain is offering a huge incentive for those who are willing to take on the adventure of moving to a rural region. In the Ambroz Valley, in Extremadura, a region bordering Portugal, the The local government will pay up to R$93,4 (or 15 thousand euros) to remote workers who want to settle there. The idea is to attract digital nomads and revitalize an area that has been suffering from constant loss population and services. Registration begins in September, and the expectation is that up to 200 people will benefit.
The Spanish government's initiative is a direct response to the population decline the region is facing. The Ambroz Valley is known for its low population density and for being one of the least visited areas in Spain, which is reflected in one of the lowest GDPs per capita in the country. To give you an idea, the unemployment rate in the region is 17,6%, well above the national average of 11,9%. But it's not all downside: fiber optic and cellular coverage is above the national average, making the location attractive to remote workers who depend on a good connection to carry out their activities.
Which remote workers can apply?
If you are a remote worker, Spain may have the incentive you needed to change your life. To participate, you must be fully remote, have not lived in the region for the past six months, and already have an approved digital nomad visa. It applies to both foreigners who already reside legally in Spain and citizens from outside the European Union who are within the country's digital nomad visa scheme.

Why Ambroz Valley, Spain?
The choice of the Ambroz Valley, in Extremadura, is not by chance. The region is the second largest wine producer in Spain and has a series of natural and cultural attractions, such as nature reserves, mountains, Roman ruins and freshwater beaches. And the best part: all this with a much lower cost of living than in other parts of the country. To give you an idea, in Badajoz, one of the cities in the region, the cost of meals, transport and public services is on average 30% lower than in the capital, Madrid.
How to apply?
There is still no exact date for the start of registrations, but it is expected to start in September. Applications will be accepted online and will remain open until all funds have been distributed. Candidates who are selected will have three months to register in a municipality in Extremadura and then another month to request payment of the grant, which will be made in one go.
This is the chance perfect for those looking for a more peaceful life closer to nature, without giving up connectivity and remote work opportunities. Spain is showing that it is possible to combine quality of life with financial opportunities, in an initiative that could be a turning point for the future of the Ambroz Valley and for remote workers who accept the challenge.

That's a great idea!!! I would really like to live there in Spain again. I've lived in Salamanca and studied for a doctorate at USAL University, and I would be happy to return to live in Spain.
