In a change that seems like a dream come true for those who are tired of carrying the weight of categories C, D or E on their National Driver's License (CNH), a new rule that simplifies the downgrading of a CNH category came into effect in 2024. The change, which came to provide some relief for the wallet and reduce bureaucracy, allows drivers to return to a lower category, such as B or A, without the need to obtain a new document.

Downgrading a driver's license category is a practical and cost-effective solution, especially for those who no longer need more demanding licenses, such as C, D or E. Starting this year, drivers who were previously subject to more rigorous exams and renewals can opt for a lighter category, thus reducing costs and the number of mandatory exams, such as the famous toxicology test. The latter, which is only necessary for those who remain in categories C, D or E, will no longer be a concern and an expense for those who downgrade their driver's license category.

With the downgrade of the CNH category, drivers gain the possibility of saving money. See some of the main benefits:

Exemption from toxicological examination: One of the biggest attractions is that by moving to a category lower, the driver is exempt from periodic toxicological examination, saving time and money.

Simplification in document management: By eliminating the need for specific tests for higher categories, the CNH renewal process becomes simpler.

Reduction of fees and additional costs: For those who only drive light vehicles, maintaining a higher category license does not make economic sense. With this new option, drivers pay less both for renewing their license and for exams.

How does the process work?

In Paranรก, for example, the downgrading of a driver's license category has become even more accessible, and can be done digitally or in person, through Detran-PR. The process involves a few simple steps:

Accessing the Detran-PR Website or App: The first step is to access the official Detran-PR website or app.

Completing the Downgrade Form: The driver must complete the specific form for downgrading the driver's license category.

Payment of Service Fee: The fee must be paid at an authorized bank.

After completion of these steps and payment, the new category is included in the CNH, which reaches the driver within 10 business days. For those who prefer the in-person experience, simply schedule an appointment at Detran-PR, taking the necessary documents to complete the process.

Relegation and mobility

The option to downgrade a driver's license category is not just a matter of personal savings; it is in line with sustainable mobility trends. Drivers are increasingly opting for smaller vehicles that consume less fuel and have a lower environmental impact. This new rule, then, seems to be in line with the movement that values โ€‹โ€‹efficiency and sustainability in urban traffic.

Important points for those thinking about downgrading their driver's license category

If you are considering a driver's license downgrade, here are the main points to keep in mind:

Eligible categories: Drivers with a CNH in categories C, D or E can opt for the downgrade.

New categories available: The new categories can be B (for regular cars) or A (for motorcycles).

Exemption from toxicological examination: Drivers in categories B or A no longer need to undergo a toxicological examination.

Variable rate: The amount of the downgrade rate may vary and must be paid before the upgrade.

Deadline for receipt: After the process is completed, the new CNH is issued within 10 business days.

A step towards debureaucratization

The downgrading of the CNH category is another step towards modernizing the Brazilian traffic system, with less bureaucracy and more convenience for drivers. With the expectation that other states will adopt similar measures, it is hoped that this new practice will encourage even more drivers to readjust their licenses, promoting a more agile traffic reality in tune with the future of mobility in Brazil.

Those new rules make the process less bureaucratic and more advantageous, especially for those who only drive light vehicles and have no interest or need to maintain a license for larger vehicles.

I paid a lot and made a sacrifice to get a higher category, go away! I prefer to continue paying for the toxicological exam even when I'm inactive, when I need the higher category for free, it won't be, right!!
