The DER will modernize inspections at 649 highway points with new, highly technological radars. These devices, scheduled to come into operation in the first half of 1, promise greater safety, precision in vehicle counting and real-time monitoring.
Are you one of those people who only slows down when passing speed cameras and then speeds up again? This strategy is on its way out โ but with a different technology than expected.
The Sรฃo Paulo Highway Department (DER-SP) clarified that the radars that will be installed on state highways are not of the Doppler type, as previously announced, but rather of the Fixed-Controller e Fixed-Reducer, which have different technology.
According to Notice no. 145/2023, the equipment is in the final phase of the bidding process, with the hiring of the winning companies already completed.

The installations are expected to be completed and the radars to start operating in the first half of 2025.
How the new radars work
Unlike Doppler radars, which use frequency waves to capture images of vehicles, the new equipment adopts technology with inductive loop embedded in the floor to measure speed.
This system is considered more reliable and less susceptible to external interference, ensuring greater precision in traffic control.
Furthermore, Fixed-Reducer radars will have displays that show the speed of vehicles in real time, and will be installed exclusively in locations where the speed limit is up to 60 km/h.
This means drivers will be immediately informed of their speed, promoting greater awareness and safety on the roads.
According to DER-SP, the new equipment will be more modern and efficient, in addition to:
- Monitor the speed accurately;
- Account for vehicles for traffic monitoring;
- Perform automatic license plate reading;
- Transmit data in real time to the DER control center.
This modernization not only improves monitoring, but also makes the work of authorities easier by providing detailed information about the flow of vehicles on Sรฃo Paulo highways.
Where will the radars be installed?
The DER plan foresees the installation of radars in 649 points distributed across more than 150 state highways not granted to the private sector.
Among the highways covered is the Luiz de Queiroz Highway (SP-304), which connects important cities such as Americana, Santa Bรกrbara d'Oeste and Piracicaba.
See some of the confirmed locations for SP-304:
Highway | Kilometer | City |
---|---|---|
SP-304 | 121,5 | Americana |
SP-304 | 126,3 | Americana |
SP-304 | 127,4 | Americana |
SP-304 | 128 | Americana |
SP-304 | 131,17 | Americana |
SP-304 | 133,4 | Santa Bรกrbara dโOeste |
SP-304 | 134,3 | Santa Bรกrbara dโOeste |
SP-304 | 150,3 | Piracicaba |
SP-304 | 167,1 | Piracicaba |
These points are part of a comprehensive plan to increase safety and improve monitoring of Sรฃo Paulo highways.
The choice of locations took into account factors such as accident history, traffic volume and road characteristics, prioritizing regions with a greater need for inspection.
Why is this measure necessary?
According to DER-SP, the objective is reduce accidents caused by speeding, one of the main causes of fatalities on the state's highways.
Recent data shows that recklessness, combined with high speed, significantly increases the risk of serious collisions, often resulting in fatalities.
Behaviors such as sudden acceleration and sudden braking not only put offending drivers at risk, but also harm other road users.
โItโs not just about punishing; we want to change driversโ behavior,โ a spokesperson for the agency said.
He reinforced that the installation of new radars seeks to create a safer environment for all highway users, from drivers to pedestrians who use the crossings near the roads.
Furthermore, vehicle counting, combined with real-time data transmission, will allow DER to better plan the necessary maintenance and improvements on highways.
โThis measure goes far beyond inspection; it represents an advance in traffic management in Sรฃo Paulo,โ added the DER representative.
Transparency and access to information
DER-SP reinforces its commitment to transparency and the provision of information to citizens.
Drivers interested in more details about the bidding and the sections covered can access the full Notice no. 145/2023 on the official DER portal (www.der.sp.gov.br). Simply access the โTransparencyโ menu, in the โTendersโ tab, and click on โNoticesโ to consult the complete information.
On the portal, you can find:
- Details on the criteria for selecting the winning companies;
- Technical specifications of the equipment to be installed;
- Complete map with the location of the planned radars.
This transparency initiative seeks to ensure that the population is fully informed about the changes and can monitor the implementation of the project.
Modernization as a solution
With implementation scheduled for 2025, DER-SP reinforces its commitment to road safety and the modernization of the inspection system in the state.
The adoption of advanced technologies for monitoring and controlling traffic represents a milestone in road management, aligning Sรฃo Paulo with the best international practices in this sector.
It is expected that, with the entry into operation of these new radars, there will be a significant reduction in the number of accidents and an increase in the efficiency of inspection, contributing to safer and more organized traffic for everyone.

This system is not to educate traffic, IT IS TO INCREASE THE COLLECTION OF FINES GENERATED.
These radars are only useful for those who have a registered vehicle, driving properly and the radar is ready to catch a driver's slip-up, or this radar can catch and surprisingly identify those who drive illegally, without a license plate, without a helmet, or drunk drivers. I hope one day the highway infrastructure system will do something great to catch and fine those who drive in a criminal manner, driving without a license plate and running red lights, running over and sometimes killing pedestrians and other drivers. It's easy to say that you invented something and be proud of what you invented. I want to see them do something totally exclusive, identify any vehicle without a license plate, catch those who drive with a license plate and the license plate really belongs to the vehicle. It's very easy. These are systems created for those who are happy to drive properly, true citizens, while those who drive outside the law and don't give a damn about the law mean nothing and still laugh. Only the inventor of this radar that catches those who slow down "in the wrong way" from a distance. I'm not against it at all, but we need technology to inhibit those who at least have a license plate, ride wheelies on their motorcycles, etc. These things would make me enchanted with radar technology, I'm a motorcyclist and driver, I see a lot of motorcyclists riding without a license plate, wheelies, almost running over pedestrians in the crosswalk and when the lights are red for vehicles, justice needs to happen for everyone.
