Cullinan Diamond: the world's largest diamond is three times larger than the previous record holder, the Excelsior Diamond, found in 1893 in another South African mine

Diving 700 meters below the surface in search of a coveted treasure is an adventure that few would have the courage to undertake. But that's exactly what the Domingo Espetacular team did, led by reporter Andrรฉ Tal, to take us to the mine where the largest diamond in history was found, weighing 3.106,75 carats (621,35 grams) and measuring 10,5 cm at its longest point. It was three times larger than the previous record holder, the Excelsior Diamond, found in 1893 in another South African mine. mining

According to Guinness World Records, the stone was named after the mine's owner, Thomas Cullinan. mining

The Cullinan Mine: Where the Largest Diamond Was Discoveredmining

Located in South Africa, the Cullinan Mine It is one of the main diamond extraction centers in the world. This region of volcanic rocks is home to a gigantic hole, about 11 kilometers in radius, which has been explored for almost 120 years. This is where miners, like George, a mine veteran, find the precious rough kimberlite stones where diamonds formed millions of years ago.mining

The journey deep into the mine is impressive. After a 4-minute ride in an elevator, the team reaches 763 meters below the surface, where diamonds are currently still found. More than 1.500 miners work in this 2-kilometer complex of tunnels, using powerful machines to break down the toughest rocks and transport the kimberlite.mining

Every day, more than 6 carats, or 1,2 tons, of diamonds are mined from the Cullinan Mine.mining

Although the mine seems like just a pile of worthless stones, the truth is that in almost all of them there is a huge potential for finding diamonds. Every day, more than 6 carats, or 1,2 tons, of diamonds are mined from the Cullinan Mine. The vast majority of these diamonds are of low quality and intended for industrial use, but around 10% of them are transformed into valuable diamonds.mining

In a cutting workshop, the team follows the process of transforming rough stones into dazzling jewelry. It all starts with scanning the stone to determine its quality and the best cut to apply. This detailed work, which can take up to a week, is carried out with great concentration and precision, as small errors can mean losses worth thousands of reais.

The Priceless Culliman โ€“ Three Times Larger Than Previous Record Holder Excelsior

The Cullinan diamond, found in the Cullinan Mine in 1905, is the largest diamond in history. This unique preciousness was transformed into different cut gems, some of which were incorporated into the crown of the British monarchy, such as the one used in the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II.

The rough diamond weighed 3.106,75 carats (621,35 grams) and measured 10,5 cm at its longest point. It was three times larger than the previous record holder, the Excelsior Diamond, found in 1893 in another South African mine. deposit

The Diamond was found 5,5 meters below ground in the Culliman Mine but is estimated to have formed at least 410 km underground. This precious thing reached the Earth's surface 1,18 billion years ago.deposit

According to experts, it is practically impossible to assess the current value of a jewel as rare and special as the Cullinan. There is nothing that can be compared to this stone, which is completely different and unique. Although finding an even larger diamond is unlikely, the search for this precious stone continues to fascinate the world.deposit

While the search for an even bigger diamond continues, the discovery of the Cullinan and its historical and cultural importance reminds us of the richness and diversity of our planet. This underground adventure inspires us to explore and preserve the treasures hidden within its depths. deposit
