Construction of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge began in 2022 using state-of-the-art techniques and super-strong materials. The final steel reinforcement, weighing 215 tons, was installed in January 2025, completing this engineering giant.

At 615 meters high, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is nine times taller than the Golden Gate Bridge, spans a gorge in southern China and promises to reduce journeys from one hour to just two minutes.

Standing an impressive 615 meters above the gorge and rising twice the height of the Eiffel Tower, this bridge is not only a record-breaker, but also promises to transform the lives of people in the Guizhou region of China.

Let's explore how this structure became a global landmark and understand the impact it will have on people's lives and the region's economy.

Stunning details of Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge

The Huajiang Bridge was built using prefabricated steel and concrete parts, which were assembled on site using giant cranes. The process included installing suspension cables and a central reinforcement of 93 segments, weighing a total of 22 tons, to ensure stability and safety at such an extreme height.

Imagine flying over the Beipan River, but instead of a plane, you are driving. This is the experience of those who will cross the Huajiang Bridge. At 615 meters high, it is not only the tallest bridge in the world, but also one of the most challenging bridges ever built. For comparison, this bridge is almost as tall as the Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China at 632 meters.

Construction on this giant bridge began in 2022 and cost £227 million. Its structure includes a central element made up of 93 segments, totaling 22.000 tons — the equivalent of three times the weight of the Eiffel Tower! And that’s not all: the final reinforcement, installed in January 2025, weighs an incredible 215 metric tons, ensuring the bridge can safely support heavy loads.

Regional impact and connectivity

Before the bridge was built, locals would spend at least an hour navigating the vast canyon to get around. Now, with the bridge’s opening, that journey will be reduced to just two minutes. It’s almost like going from a horse-drawn carriage to a bullet train in terms of efficiency!

The bridge will not only connect territories; it will also unite economies. According to Chen Jianlei, deputy director of the Guizhou Department of Transportation, the structure will be vital to strengthening economic ties between neighboring cities such as Guiyang, Anshun and Qianxinan. This integration will boost development regional, attracting investment and promoting a more robust economy.

Curiosities and records

Currently, the title of tallest bridge in the world belongs to the Beipanjiang Bridge, also in Guizhou province, at 545 meters high. However, the Huajiang Bridge will beat it, surpassing this height by 70 meters!

The numbers are impressive: it is 0,9 miles long, has four lanes of traffic and engineering that defies the laws of gravity. In addition, the bridge was designed to withstand heavy traffic without compromising safety, thanks to state-of-the-art materials and innovative techniques.

The vision of the future of engineering

The engineers behind the masterpiece described the project as a monumental achievement. According to the bridge’s chief engineer, seeing the construction come to life is an experience that brings “profound pride.” After all, it’s not every day that height and innovation of this magnitude are pushed.

The Huajiang Bridge is not only an engineering landmark, but also a symbol of what is possible when technology and vision come together. It sets a new standard for global infrastructure, inspiring even bolder projects in the future.
