An impressive discovery! This is the second largest diamond ever found, weighing in at a whopping 2.492 carats. Check out the details of this rare gem.

Last year, a diamond of 2.492 carats was discovered in Karowe Diamond Mine, in Botswana, by the Canadian company Lucara Diamond Corp.

The stone, of very impressive size, was identified using advanced X-ray technology, which allows extraction without fragmentation, ensuring its integrity.

The technology used in the discovery was developed to detect and recover large diamonds without damaging them, allowing stones of this caliber to be extracted without compromising their customer service.

This method has been widely adopted in mining to preserve the maximum value of the gemstones found.

The Karowe Diamond Mine has already produced other notable discoveries, reinforcing its importance in the global production of large-scale diamonds. With this new discovery, the mine reaffirms its potential to continue revealing stones of exceptional value.

Largest diamond in history

Only Diamond Cullinan, found in South Africa in 1905, is larger, weighing 3.106 carats. The Cullinan was cut into several gems that are now part of the British Crown Jewels.

Prior to this new discovery, the largest diamond mined in Botswana was a 1.758-carat stone found in 2019, also at the Karowe Mine.

Botswana is one of the world's leading diamond producers, with the sector accounting for around 30% of the country's GDP and 80% of exports.

The government has proposed a law that requires foreign companies to grant 24% of their operations to local investors, if the government itself does not opt for such participation.

Technology and mining

Lucara Diamond Corp uses Mega Diamond Recovery technology to identify and preserve large diamonds. Technological advancements have allowed for the extraction of increasingly larger stones, which could lead to new discoveries in the coming years.

The ownership of African diamonds is a matter of debate. In South Africa, there are calls for the return of gems cut from Cullinan, arguing that they were mined during the colonial period. In Botswana, the government is seeking to increase economic benefits for the population through new mining policies.

The discovery of the 2.492-carat diamond underscores Botswana’s importance in the mining industry. The use of advanced technology makes it easier to extract larger stones and could lead to more discoveries in the future. The government is keen to ensure that the wealth generated directly benefits the country.
