Toyota's Futuristic City is announced at the foot of Mount Fuji and promises to bring dozens of new technologies to the global stage. The city of the future received investments of R$61 billion and has almost 50 thousand m³.

Known as “Woven City” or simply “City of the Future,” the new Japanese city at the foot of Mount Fuji, created by Toyota, will select people interested in living in the place, described by the company itself as a “living laboratory” full of new technologies. In this article, we will detail Toyota’s futuristic city that is attracting attention.

Futuristic city was presented in 2020

Toyota’s futuristic city is a laboratory because residents will have the chance to experiment with new technologies that impact different areas of life, including mobility and sustainability. Completed in Shizuoka in October 2024, the Woven city received an estimated investment of 10 billion dollars, equivalent to R$61 billion.

The idea is basically to create a City of the Future with new technologies, where innovation and technology will be at the center of attention. According to the manufacturer on the project's official website, it is redefining what it means to move.

Toyota is challenging the current state of mobility by improving the movement of people, goods, information and energy.

Centered on three main concepts, a living laboratory, Human-Centered and City in Continuous Evolution, the city of the Future serves as a test course for mobility to fulfill its purpose of well-being for all.

Toyota's futuristic city was first unveiled five years ago at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest technology fair, organized by the Consumer Technology Association.

First residents will arrive in the city of the future in 2025

Details revealed by Toyota President Akio Toyoda describe a city of the future spanning over 48.500 square feet focused on experimenting with all future technologies, including automated driving, robotics, robotics and artificial intelligence. Later this year, the first residents will begin moving into Toyota’s futuristic city, kicking off the first phase of the project.

The first residents will mostly be Toyota employees and their families. However, as the city of the future, full of new technologies, advances, the company expects the population to reach around 2,000 people.

Called a living laboratory by the automaker itself, residents of the city of the future will serve as guinea pigs to test and experiment with new technologies that will be implemented there.

To this end, in addition to the first residents who are company employees, Toyota has already announced that it will select candidates who plan to participate in the experiment and, in this way, live in the new city. Toyota is expected to announce soon how this selection will be made and who will be able to apply.

More than 2 people will be housed in Toyota's futuristic city

The company says the city of the future will have a population of 2.000, including employees and their families, retirees, shopkeepers, scientists, industry partners, entrepreneurs and academics.

The president made a point of mentioning that even “pets” will be welcome. To create tools that can be used in everyday life, the city will encourage co-creation with its residents, called “Weavers”.

Residents can use and interact with new products and services and provide real-time feedback to developers. However, it is still too early to define the city as an effective way to test new technologies. Innovations generated in Toyota’s futuristic city will not necessarily work across the board on a large scale.
