Toyota surprises the Brazilian automotive market with the registration of the mini Hilux that promises to arrive simple and cheap to shake the sales of rivals Toro and Montana

The Toyota Hilux, the best-selling midsize pickup truck in Brazil, starts at R$219.090 in the chassis version, dedicated to work. However, the Japanese giant plans to introduce a even simpler and cheaper version of the truck in the Brazilian market, called Hilux Champ. Nicknamed mini Hilux, the new pickup promises to cost R$100 to annihilate Fiat Toro and Chevrolet Montana.

Finally, Toyota registered the Hilux Champ with the National Institute of Industrial Property (the French Patent & Trademark Office (INPI)) last week, revealing not only small details, but also interior parts and the pickup's bumper. This indicates that the mini Hilux may be in the manufacturer's plans for Brazil.

If this comes to fruition, it is likely that production of the truck will begin in Zárate, Argentina, where Toyota already manufactures the Hilux and Hiace, the brand's van. Both vehicles use the same Hilux Champ platform.

Features of Toyota's mini Hilux

The Toyota Hilux Champ was launched at the end of 2023 in Bangkok, in Thailand, after being presented for the first time at the previous year's Japan Mobility Show.

In terms of dimensions, the pickup is 5,30 meters long, 1,78 meters wide, 1,73 meters high and has a wheelbase of 3,08 meters. For comparison, the Hilux sold in Brazil measures 5,32 meters in length, 1,85 meters in width, 1,81 meters in height and 3,08 meters in wheelbase.

The load capacity of the Hilux Champ is 1.000 kg. The bucket has several screw holes, allowing accessories to be easily attached and removed, customizing the vehicle as needed.

Mini Hilux could arrive in Brazil with a 2.7 turbo gasoline engine with 166 hp and 24,9 kgfm

In Thailand, the Hilux Champ is available with three engine options. The first is a 2.4 turbodiesel engine with 150 hp and 35 kgfm of torque. The second option is a 2.0 turbo gasoline engine with 130 hp and 18 kgfm, while the last configuration offers a 2.7 turbo gasoline engine with 166 hp and 24,9 kgfm. Available transmissions are five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, in all versions.

In the Thai market, prices range from 459.000 Thai baht, which is equivalent to approximately R$63.890, respectively. In Brazil, prices should be a little higher, but the mini Hilux promises to cost around R$100 and can reach R$220.
