Transnordestina has just signed a R$15,2 million engineering project for the stretch between Salgueiro and Porto Suape, with the aim of avoiding past mistakes and delays. Find out how this measure can speed up the works!
The Transnordestina Railway is a project of great relevance for the logistical and economic development of the Northeast, and has recently taken on new directions in Pernambuco.
The progress was marked by the signing of a contract between Infra SA, linked to the Ministry of Transport, and the Strategic Consortium – Prosul, which will be responsible for preparing the basic and executive engineering projects for the stretch connecting Salgueiro to the Port of Suape.
This agreement represents an investment of R$ 15,217 million, as published in Official Gazette.

Although construction has not yet begun, the development of the engineering project is an essential step towards making the construction of the railway viable, which is scheduled to begin in 2025.
this is the first investment federal, in 14 years, focused on the development of projects for new railway sections. The initiative aims to prevent project failures, which could increase costs and delay the project delivery schedule.
The project will be delivered in four months
The Strategic Consortium – Prosul will be responsible for developing the initial projects for the first 55 km of the railway, delivering this work within a period of four months.
The detail provided by these projects will allow Infra SA to begin the bidding process for the works of railroad. The complete schedule for the execution of Transnordestina services is estimated at 18 months.
The stretch between the Port of Suape and Salgueiro, in the Sertão region of Pernambuco, covers 520 kilometers and is estimated to cost around R$450 million. This amount will be fully covered by the federal government.
The railway was included in the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), being seen as a strategic component for reducing logistical costs in various sectors, such as agribusiness, mining and industries in the Northeast.
The resumption of construction of the railway in Pernambuco represents an important achievement for the State, since, in December 2022, the Pernambuco part had been removed from the project through an addendum to the contract signed between the previous government and Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), the railway concessionaire.
This agreement left the Pernambuco section under the responsibility of the federal government, while CSN maintained the sections in Ceará and Piauí.
This situation generated dissatisfaction among political leaders in Pernambuco, resulting in coordinated efforts to reverse the decision. Governor Raquel Lyra, together with the Pernambuco caucus in the National Congress, worked to raise awareness among President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva about the importance of including the state in the project.
