On social media, the president demands urgency from Zelensky and complains about a three-week delay in signing a strategic partnership between Washington and Kiev.

US President Donald Trump publicly criticized Ukraine on Friday, 25, for not yet finalizing a rare earths agreement with Washington. In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump demanded urgency from Volodymyr Zelensky's government and stated that the signing of the document has been delayed for at least three weeks.

“Ukraine, led by Volodymyr Zelensky, has not signed the final documents of the very important Rare Earths Agreement with the United States. It is at least three weeks late. I expect it to be signed IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote as he traveled to Rome, where he attended the pope’s funeral.

The charge comes as Trump approaches his 100th day in office as president of the United States. According to sources cited by CNN, the president is reportedly frustrated with the pace of negotiations involving Ukraine, both in the economic area and in efforts to broker a peace agreement with Russia.

Rare earths deal considered strategic by US

In February, Donald Trump described the rare earths deal with Ukraine as essential to US national security. The treaty provides for Washington to have easier access to strategic minerals extracted from Ukrainian territory, which are considered essential for sectors such as technology, defense and renewable energy.

The US government's goal is to strengthen the supply of these minerals outside the influence of markets controlled by China, the world's largest producer of rare earths. For Ukraine, the signing of the agreement is seen as an opportunity to consolidate US support and obtain additional security guarantees amid the conflict with Russia.

Trump says peace talks are moving forward

Despite public criticism of the economic agreement, Trump said that “work on the Russia-Ukraine Peace Agreement is going well” and added that “success appears to be in the future.” The initiative to broker a ceasefire or a diplomatic solution to the war has been a priority for the current US administration.

Since the beginning of the year, Trump has maintained contacts with European leaders and sent diplomatic representatives to try to unlock peace talks. However, sources close to the White House point out that the lack of concrete progress so far has generated dissatisfaction within the government.

Rare earths gain importance in geopolitical dispute

The United States' interest in signing agreements with allied countries on rare earths has increased in recent years. These minerals are essential for the manufacture of products such as smartphones, batteries, turbines and high-tech military equipment.

Global dependence on China in this sector has led Washington to seek strategic alternatives. Ukraine, which has significant reserves of rare earths, is seen as a potentially crucial partner in this diversification effort.

For the Trump administration, securing access to these raw materials also represents a way to strengthen the United States' economic and military position against strategic rivals.

Pressure mounts on Kiev

Donald Trump’s public pressure on Ukraine signals the importance the US government attaches to the rare earths deal. At the same time, it highlights the complexity of political negotiations that involve not only economic interests but also the context of the war with Russia.

The expectation is that, in light of the demands, Kiev will speed up the signing process to consolidate American support and reinforce its own international security demands.
