The US accuses China of building a military complex larger than the Pentagon. The structure located in Beijing could replace the country's current command center.

On Friday (7), US government intelligence said that China is working on developing a war complex larger than the Pentagon. The project, which could be 10 times larger than the Pentagon, is located west of Beijing and would serve as the Chinese government's command center in times of war. The US accuses China after satellite images and reports were provided by the British newspaper The Financial Times.

War complex larger than the Pentagon covers 6km²

According to data from the British newspaper, US government officials accuse China and have been closely monitoring the site since construction began in mid-2024. Intelligence analysts investigating the case have called the project “Beijing Military City”.

Satellite images obtained by the report show a war complex built on an area of 6 square kilometers, 30 kilometers southwest of Beijing. These images are also being examined by the US government.

It is important to highlight that the The Financial Times report was written by Washington-based journalists Demetri Sevastopulo, Joe Leahy and Ryan McMorrow, from Beijing, Chris Cook, from London, and Kathrin Hille, from Taiwan.

The images, in which the US accuses China, show that the area of the war complex, larger than the Pentagon, has deep excavations that, according to military experts, will house large reinforced bunkers to protect the Asian country's military leaders during any conflict, including the chances of a possible nuclear war.

Construction advances as China expands military arsenal and invests in new defense technologies

According to former CIA China analyst Dennis Wilder, if confirmed, this new, larger-than-Pentagon warfighting complex for military leadership, including President Xi as chairman of the Central Military Commission, shows China's intentions to build not just a world-class conventional force, but an advanced nuclear warfighting capability.

The Chinese project is being built at a time when China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) is developing new weapons and designs in preparation for the force's centenary in 2027. The US has accused China of this and also points out that Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the PLA to also develop the capability to attack Taiwan.

The newspaper also reported that although there was no military presence at the site, signs warning against taking photos or using drones could be seen at the site. In addition, a guard at a gate stated that entry to the building was prohibited.

New war complex larger than the Pentagon will replace the current one

A former U.S. intelligence official said that while the current PLA headquarters in central Beijing is relatively new, it was not designed to be a secure command center. According to the former official, China’s main secure command center is located in the Western Hills, northeast of the new facility, and was built decades ago, at the height of the Cold War.

The size, scale and partially buried details of the new, larger-than-the-Pentagon war complex highlight that it will be a new replacement for the current complex as the main wartime command facility. War.

It is worth noting that the US is accusing China at the same time that Donald Trump is announcing the construction of an anti-missile defense shield, called the “American Iron Dome”, an undertaking inspired by Israel’s system of the same name.
