In partnership with Redes Cordiais and ITS-Rio, the US Embassy offers a free artificial intelligence course for Brazilians.

If you are a journalist, student or communication professional in Brazil, the US Embassy has an unmissable opportunity for you. In partnership with Redes Cordiais and the Instituto Tecnologia e Sociedade (ITS-Rio), the Embassy is offering a free artificial intelligence course focused on the convergence between journalism, elections and AI. This training will be given during the month of August and promises to be a game changer for anyone who wants to understand the impact of artificial intelligence on political coverage and the challenges of disinformation in election times.

Course structure and topics covered

The course, completely free, consists of a hybrid panel and six online classes. It will feature live sessions, interactive discussions with renowned professionals from Brazil and the USA, and rich content that covers:

  • Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
  • Use of AI in electoral contexts
  • Disinformation and AI
  • AI regulation in Brazil and the USA
  • Ethics and AI

The opening event will be on August 8th, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, at Casa Thomas Jefferson – Asa Sul, in Brasília. Participants can choose to participate in person or online. Panel topics include the impact of artificial intelligence on political journalism, coverage of the 2024 elections, risks of new forms of disinformation in electoral contexts, and ethical precautions in using AI in political coverage.

The relevance of the course to current journalism

With the growing importance of artificial intelligence in today's world, understanding how this technology can be used ethically and effectively in journalism is essential. The free artificial intelligence course offered by the US Embassy in partnership with ITS-Rio and Redes Cordiais aims to equip Brazilian journalists with knowledge and skills to better serve their audiences and defend the principles of responsible reporting.

According to Luke Ortega, spokesperson for the Embassy and Consulates, the event aims to stimulate critical thinking and deepen understanding of the role of the media in shaping public discourse. One of the focuses of the course is the threat of disinformation to democratic processes.

With AI, new forms of disinformation emerge and, therefore, it is crucial that journalists know how to deal with these challenges. The course will cover resources for election coverage, copyright violations, evolving business models and, of course, ethical considerations in integrating AI tools into political reporting.
