US government offers free course on artificial intelligence for Brazilians

The US government is offering a free course on artificial intelligence aimed at Brazilians. The course will run from August 26th to September 5th and will cover a wide range of relevant topics.

The United States Embassy and Consulates in Brazil have vacancies open for a free course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with a focus on the Brazilian public. The training offered by the US Government, in partnership with Redes Cordiais and the Instituto Tecnologia e Sociedade (ITS-Rio), focuses on students and professionals in the sector in Brazil.

Key details about the free artificial intelligence course

In this course offered by the US Government, the first class will provide an overview of AI and journalism and popular applications of artificial intelligence, such as pattern and image recognition, natural language processing, computer vision and recommendation systems.

The class will take place on August 26th from 19pm to 20:30pm Brasília time. Among the professors are: Fabro Steibel, Executive Director of the Rio de Janeiro Institute of Technology and Society (ITS Rio)

The second class aims to delve deeper into the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on Journalism, aiming to present changes in journalism business models due to AI, as well as resources and new possibilities for action for journalists and news companies.

This free course on artificial intelligence will take place on the 27th from 19pm to 20:30pm and will be taught by teachers: Guilherme Amado, Content Director at Redes Cordiais [English] and Samaruddin Kassim Stewart, Consultant with experience at Google and Stanford.

The third class aims to focus on Ethics and AI, focusing on presenting the importance of transparency, reliability and ethics in artificial intelligence systems and journalistic work with AI. It is scheduled for the 29th and will be taught by Garance Burke, Investigative Journalist at the Associated Press and Fernanda Rodrigues, researcher at Federal University of Minas Gerais and Instituto Iris. It is worth mentioning that there will also be other classes such as Disinformation and AI, Regulation of AI in Brazil and the World, Good and bad uses of AI in electoral contexts, among others.

Registration for the free course on artificial intelligence can be completed until August 26th. On the registration page, data such as Full Name, Email, CPF, State, Profession, Gender, among other details, will be required.

According to Luke Ortega, spokesperson for the Embassy and Consulates, it is believed that, by engaging with these issues, Brazilian journalists can better serve their audiences and defend the principles of responsible reporting.

The spokesperson also highlights that this free course on artificial intelligence from the US Government will equip journalists with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving landscape of political journalism. To the unite experts from Brazil and the USA, the event aims to stimulate critical thinking and deepen understanding of the role of the media in shaping public discourse.
