USP may finally have a subway station within the University City campus. The master plan, in the final stages of approval, integrates the station into the context of a more accessible and connected campus.
Soon, the campus of University of São Paulo (USP), one of the largest academic centers in the country, may receive an important new development that promises to transform the routine of students, teachers and staff.
The construction of a metro station within the University City, as part of the new master plan for the campus Butantã, is the big bet to facilitate access to the institution, improve integration with public transport and offer more practicality for the community.
The proposal is bold and is already in the final stages of development. The project foresees that the future University of São Paulo station, integrated into the new Line 22-Marrom, will be built on Avenida Professor Luciano Gualberto, close to the Rectory and Praça do Relógio.

According to information from the Metro, this line will connect the city of Cotia, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, to the Sumaré station, in the west of the capital, also passing through the municipality of Osasco and neighborhoods such as Pinheiros.
However, Line 22-Marrom is currently in the initial phase of studies and there is still no exact forecast for the bidding or the start of works.
Mobility and accessibility plans at USP
The possibility of bringing a subway station to the USP campus is an idea that has been discussed for some time.
During the construction of Line 4-Yellow, which connects important areas of São Paulo, there was an expectation that a station could be installed near Cidade Universitária.
However, due to technical and feasibility difficulties, the closest station was on Avenida Vital Brasil, where Butantã Station was opened in 2012.
To this day, this is the closest metro stop for campus users, accessible via free shuttle bus lines for students.
The new master plan, which is being consolidated for final approval, seeks to expand internal and external accessibility to the campus, in addition to including projects that promote the use of alternative transportation, such as bicycles and safe areas for pedestrians.
The proposals also highlight improvements in security, heritage preservation, and sustainable use of space, and are all available on USP's official website.
Line 22-Brown: a project in progress
The idea of building Line 22-Marrom, which will integrate the USP campus into the subway system, was announced in 2022 by Metrô.
At that time, the bidding process was opened for the development of the preliminary design of the line, and, in 2023, the environmental impact study and the preliminary engineering design began.
The proposal to install the Universidade de São Paulo station was already part of the preliminary discussions for this line.
According to the Metro's 2023 Integrated Report, this line has complex planning, which requires several stages of study and planning.
This development has mobilized important discussions between the university community and managers, who defend the importance of ensuring the integration of the campus with metropolitan transport.
University community debates accessibility and sustainability
Since September, USP has been holding public hearings to discuss the guidelines of the new master plan, open to both the academic community and residents of the region.
The forecast is that, by December, a definitive version of the project will be approved.
The new metro station and the plan's guidelines are seen as a step forward in terms of mobility and sustainability, values that are increasingly highlighted in university policies.
The new master plan also aims to optimize the campus' infrastructure, expanding the services offered and initiatives aimed at sustainability and the preservation of the space's historical and environmental heritage.
With the subway line, USP would become even more accessible and integrated into the urban context of São Paulo, making life easier for users and promoting greater interaction with neighboring communities.
Now, with the possibility of Line 22-Marrom, the University of São Paulo takes a new step towards modernizing the travel experience on campus, which could mark a transformative moment for the largest university in the country.
Will USP finally get the subway station it has wanted for so long?
