Ukraine on Friday unveiled a new, locally developed drone rocket that promises to change the dynamics of the conflict with Russia. Dubbed “Peklo” (hell) in Ukrainian, the device has an estimated range of 700 km, far exceeding the range of US-supplied ATACMS missiles.

The unveiling of the new drone rocket took place at an official ceremony attended by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Manufactured by state-owned Ukroboronprom, the drone has the potential to strike targets deeper into Russia, a response to Moscow's continued use of long-range missiles.

According to a representative of the manufacturer, the Peklo is capable of reaching speeds of 700 km/h. Although more precise technical details, such as proof of range or images in action, have not been released, the Ukrainian Minister of production weapons company recently said the device could be compared to a cruise missile, flying at low altitude to its target.

The drone measures just over a meter in length, equipped with side wings and rear fins, and is the second model of this technology presented by Kiev. This innovation demonstrates Ukraine's effort to balance forces, since until recently its allies were hesitant to authorize the use of Western weapons, such as ATACMS missiles, to attack inside Russia.

Since the beginning of the conflict, Russia has used thousands of missiles and drones to target strategic Ukrainian infrastructure. Kiev, in turn, has been adapting local solutions to carry out long-range attacks, including explosive drones capable of reaching targets 1.000 km away.

Zelenskiy stressed that Ukraine works in development of four types of missiles, although progress on the program faces challenges due to issues in the global supply chain. Despite the difficulties, progress with the new drone rocket bolsters Ukraine's ability to carry out strikes deeper into Russian territory.

With this new weaponry, Kiev signals its determination to balance forces in the conflict, while continuing to seek innovations to overcome the limitations imposed by war.
