Use of Storm Shadow missiles marks new escalation in conflict, strengthening Ukraine's position amid global tensions.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Ukraine took another bold step in its military strategy by deploying Storm Shadow missiles in strikes inside Russian territory. This action occurred just one day after the start of the use of US ATACMS missiles, cementing a week of great tension in the conflict that has already lasted more than a year.

The strikes targeted Russia's Kursk region, a crucial area for the logistical supply of Russian forces, raising the intensity even further of war. Analysts indicate that this Western decision to authorize the use of Storm Shadow missiles was a direct response to the growing military alliance between Russia and North Korea, which has recently sent troops and heavy equipment to support Moscow.

The power of Storm Shadow and ATACMS

But why have Storm Shadow missiles become a focal point in this new phase of the conflict? Developed by the United Kingdom and France, these cruise missiles have a range of up to 300 km, allowing long-range strikes with surgical precision. Their unique feature is their ability to fly at extremely low altitudes, evading radar and hitting fortified targets, such as bunkers and command centers.

The decision to deploy them inside Russia was seen as a test of the weapon's effectiveness in high-tension scenarios. Storm Shadow missiles had previously demonstrated their lethality in conflicts in the Middle East, but had never been used directly against Russian targets.

ATACMS missiles, also recently used by Ukraine, complement this offensive, expanding reach and allowing Kiev to balance forces on the battlefield. Together, these weapons represent a milestone in Ukraine’s resistance, bolstering its defense capabilities and signaling its determination not to give in to Russian pressure.

Reactions and impacts

Moscow's response was immediate. The Kremlin called the attacks a "dangerous escalation" and launched an intercontinental ballistic missile against Dnipro on Thursday (21). Global tension has increased, and new retaliation is expected in the coming days.

On the other hand, the use of Storm Shadow missiles strengthens Ukraine's position in potential peace negotiations. By demonstrating its ability to strike strategic targets inside Russia, Kiev increases its leverage at the negotiating table and forces Moscow to reconsider its actions.

The future of conflict

The use of long-range weapons such as Storm Shadow missiles and ATACMS raises questions about the next steps in the conflict. The psychological impact of such strikes could destabilise Russian forces and civilians, while replenishing arsenals will depend on continued support from the West.

With the Biden administration stepping up military support ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration and the UK reaffirming its commitment to Ukraine, the outlook remains unpredictable. What is clear is that the conflict in Ukraine will not be decided solely on the battlefield, but also in delicate negotiations between global leaders.

This new phase of the war is not just a strategic milestone, but also a reminder of the devastating impact that military technology can have in modern conflicts. As the world watches with apprehension, the use of Storm Shadow missiles highlights Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and the complexity of the global dynamics that define this historic moment.

There are still people who think that Russia is the most powerful country in terms of weapons and war technology... it is taking a beating from a country that until recently no one had heard of... imagine if instead of Ukraine it was the USA...
I believe that in a week the Americans would have already pulverized the Russians from the face of the earth... I don't know, but if we were to be careless, even Brazil would easily win a war with Russia.
