The United States government has announced an investment of 13 billion dollars to develop the next generation of the “Doomsday Plane”, a strategic military aircraft that will replace the aging Boeing 747-200 E-4B. The new aircraft, designed to be a mobile command center capable of operating in nuclear war scenarios, will be developed by Sierra Nevada Corporation and will feature advanced technologies for in-flight refueling, secure communication and radiation protection.

The project, which promises to be one of the most sophisticated in terms of aerial military technology, aims to replace the current E-4B Nightwatch, modified Boeing 747-200 models that have served as mobile command platforms. This United States military aircraft is known for its ability to operate in extreme conditions, including nuclear war scenarios.

The company Sierra Nevada Corporation won the tender to develop the new model, which should be based on existing commercial aircraft, but with significant adaptations to meet specific military needs. It is estimated that the contract, worth approximately 67 billion reais, will allow the purchase of between eight and ten aircraft.

Equipped with advanced technologies such as an in-flight refueling system, communications resistant to electronic attacks and protections against nuclear radiation

The new plane, which has not yet had its base model confirmed, is touted as a “flying fortress”. It is expected to be equipped with advanced technologies such as a in-flight refueling system, communications resistant to electronic attacks and protections against nuclear radiation. These features are essential to ensure that the aircraft can serve as an effective mobile command center in nuclear war scenarios.

Sierra Nevada Corporation, for this military aircraft project, marks a significant point, as this company also has partnerships with Embraer

The choice of Sierra Nevada Corporation for this project marks a significant point, as this company also has partnerships with Embraer and other big names in the aerospace industry. The decision to use commercial planes as the basis for the new model suggests that the Boeing 747-8, due to its size and capacity, could be the likely candidate, especially considering that its production has already been discontinued, including the cargo version.

Choosing this specific model brings advantages such as greater internal space, which is crucial to accommodate the complex systems that the aircraft will require. On the other hand, Boeing's recent loss in a separate bid for the new Air Force One, also based on the 747-8, highlights the financial and logistical challenges associated with developing such specialized aircraft.

The first of the United States’ new “Doomsday” planes is expected to be delivered within the next decade

The first of the new “Doomsday” planes is expected to be delivered within the next decade, highlighting the long lead time necessary development for an aircraft with these unique capabilities. Until then, the current E-4Bs are expected to continue in operation, despite their advanced age, due to their robust construction and low frequency of use compared to commercial aircraft. This project, although expensive, is seen as a critical necessity for the national defense of the United States, preparing the country to respond to extreme threats with the highest technology available.
