Danish manufacturer beats competitors to become preferred supplier for UK offshore wind farm. The Norfolk Vanguard complex will have 1,4 GW phases.
Vestas has consolidated its position as a leader by winning one of the UK's largest offshore turbine contracts for Vattenfall's 2.800 MW Norfolk Vanguard complex located in the east of England. The Danish manufacturer is about to be confirmed as the Swedish developer's preferred supplier, beating competitors Siemens Gamesa and GE in negotiations, according to sources. Vestas will supply its V236-15.0MW platform (shown at the Osterild test site) for the 1,4 GW East and 1,4 GW West phases of the North Sea project. Both projects are expected to have around 92 turbines each. Installation is expected to start around 2027 to align with the delivery of foundations from SeAH Wind, which has been awarded a £900 million contract to manufacture monopiles at its North Sea.
The announcement is a blow to Siemens Gamesa, which had been named preferred supplier in 2021 for the entire Norfolk development, including the now-stalled 1,4 GW Boreas project. Vattenfall decided to return to the market after deciding not to bid for Vanguard in this year's AR5. Among ongoing discussions between the developer and Vestas are UK manufacturing and sorting options, according to sources. Vestas, a Danish manufacturer, is at the forefront of this major project in the wind energy sector.
