In 2018, Klabin's civil construction project with the objective of reducing carbon was responsible for the reuse of 25 tons of solid waste per month
Concern for the environment is a recurring theme on the agenda of various sectors of society, especially in civil construction. Initiatives to foster a circular and low-carbon economy not only reduce the generation of solid waste and effluents and increase their reuse, but are also at the forefront of discussions by companies seeking more sustainable management practices.

Klabin, which is committed to incorporating these solutions into its operations, from forestry to packaging, has a series of projects to reuse its waste. One such project uses the sludge created in the wastewater treatment process to make bricks for use by the construction industry.

The project, launched in 2018, was developed by the Environment team at Klabin's Rio Negro Unit in Paraná, with support from the corporate Sustainability and Research and Development teams. As a result, 25 tons of waste per month began to receive a new application, being reused even in the company's own works.

“We believe in the circular economy as the basis for building a sustainable future. Today, we have numerous initiatives on this front, including various practices for reusing waste generated in our operations.
To give you an idea, today we have reached the rate of 97% of all waste generated in our operations being reused or recycled, and we have established the goal of reaching ZERO waste sent to landfills by 2030”, says Júlio Nogueira, from sustainability and Klabin environment manager.
Klabin wants to reduce carbon emissions in civil construction
In addition to a more ecologically correct disposal of waste, more responsible solutions for various sectors of the economy represent fundamental actions for mitigating climate change.
In civil construction, for example, according to surveys, the use of concrete currently accounts for 8% of carbon emissions. The search for alternatives that cause less environmental impact is in line with the low-carbon policies that are increasingly being adopted in several countries.
Another important initiative also focused on civil construction is carried out at the Waste Treatment Station at the Puma Unit, which is also responsible for treating waste at the Monte Alegre Unit, which is transformed into blocks for paving or culverts, which can also be used in projects of civil construction.
