Now, it is preparing to launch the first ship powered by ammonia in the world, in a pioneering project in the segment.

The tug, originally built in 1957, is being adapted by the company to use the clean substance as the main fuel in operations.
“Putting the first ammonia-powered vessel on water signals a major milestone on the journey to zero-emissions shipping, as ammonia is set to become the primary fuel source for the world’s giant cargo ships by 2050,” the company highlighted. .
The technology used by the company on the ammonia-powered vessel uses liquid ammonia through its cracking modules integrated into a hybrid fuel cell system.
In this way, Amogy manages to power the vessel's engine efficiently, thus allowing the neutralization of carbon emissions during operations.
This is one of the main problems faced by the transport sector today. With the company's innovation project, the use of fuel as an alternative to carbon emitters can contribute to the decarbonization of the segment.

To develop the alternative fuel project for its new tugboat, Amogy will rely on green ammonia from the company Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA).

C-Job Naval Architects, an independent ship design firm, and Feeney Shipyard, the company from which Amogy acquired the tug, will also be part of the sustainability and decarbonization initiative.
She will still work with Unique Technical Solutions (UTS) for the electrical systems during testing of the tug vessel.
The US Coast Guard and classification society DNV are actively participating in the development of the Amogy fuel design, ensuring all maritime safety standards.
The company has already secured US$70 million in funding from investors and, by the end of 2023, will launch the official design of the new tugboat powered by ammonia fuel.
