Starting this month, the Fiat Strada, with an impressive 130 horsepower and 20,4 kgfm of torque, will be available in 8 African countries
Fiat's iconic compact pickup truck, the Strada, known for its strong presence in the Brazilian market, is about to expand its global borders. After a decade focused exclusively on South America, the latest iteration of the Strada, launched in 2020 with a double cab and four-door version, will arrive in eight countries in Africa from November this year, according to the AutoEsporte website.
Cape Verde, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea-Conakry, Madagascar, Nigeria and Rwanda will be the new destinations for this compact pickup truck.
Turbo Power: Fiat Strada Heading to Africa
In a strategic move, Fiat recently introduced turbocharged versions of the compact pickup truck. Ranch and Ultra configurations now feature a robust Turbo 200 engine, a 1.0 turboflex that delivers impressive 130 horsepower and 20,4 kgfm of torque. The unknown lies in the choice of configurations that will be exported to these African countries, given that Strada offers seven versions on the Brazilian market, some still equipped with aspirated engines.

Fiat Strada's foray beyond South American borders is not unprecedented. Between the years 2000 and 2015, the first generation of pickup was present on several continents. In this period, the Strada has undergone several restylings, offering single, extended, double and even three-door cab options. With several engines, including the well-known 1.4 fire and the 1.8 E.torQ, used in models such as the Jeep Renegade and Fiat Toro, Strada has consolidated its global presence, now in Africa.
Diesel engine on Italian soil
A curious chapter in Strada's international trajectory was its commercialization with diesel engines in some markets, such as Italy. Equipped with 1.9 JTD and 1.3 Multijet engines, powered by diesel, the pickup stood out for its fuel consumption efficiency, reaching averages close to 19 km/l.
However, this version did not arrive in Brazil due to local requirements, which require 4×4 traction and a load capacity of more than one ton for diesel vehicles.
Boosting exports in challenging times
The decision to export the Fiat Strada to Africa comes at a crucial time for the Brazilian automotive industry. Given the recent 26,9% drop in exports, as revealed by the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea), Strada, sales leader in the Brazilian market with 98.511 units sold this year, emerges as a key piece to boost sales figures exports and reverse the declining trend in Brazilian vehicle exports.
The pickup truck's presence in Africa represents not only a geographic expansion, but also a strategy to strengthen the position of the Brazilian automotive industry on the international scene.
