Indications of oil and natural gas deposits in Roraima can attract strong investments to the local energy sector. The ANP should then include about 2 blocks of the Tacutu Basin in the national permanent offer auction.

For this Monday, (05/12), the National Agency of Petroleum and Biofuels (ANP) is planning to include about 2 exploration blocks in the Tacutu Basin in the auction of standing offer national. The main objective is to include the Roraima region in the National Interconnected System (SIN) and expand investments in the energy sector. This is because there are indications of oil and natural gas deposits in the basin region, according to recent studies.

Inclusion of Tacutu Basin blocks in the ANP's permanent offer auction may attract strong investments to the state's energy market

The ANP is planning to encourage investments in the oil and natural gas sector in the north of the country and intends to include 12 exploration blocks in the region in the permanent concession offer auction.

Of these 12 blocks, 2 will be in the Tacutu Basin area, in Roraima, and aim to contribute to investments in the energy sector in the region.

There are studies that indicate evidence of oil and natural gas deposits in this area. These studies indicate that there is a very clear geological separation between the Venezuelan oil basins and the Tacutu basin, which encompasses parts of Roraima and Guyana.

During the 70s, Petrobras drilled three wells in the Serra do Tucano region, in the municipality of Bonfim, and found good evidence of natural gas.

However, the company withdrew the probes and did not continue the plan for exploring fuels in the region.

In neighboring Guyana, oil and gas was already discovered by the Canadian company Homeoil more than 20 years ago, having installed a “Christmas tree” in the town of Miritizeiro, a few kilometers from Roraima, ready to drain production.

In this way, the signs of oil and natural gas in the Tacutu Basin blocks are once again on the agenda of the ANP, which intends to use the permanent offer auction to expand investments in the region.

Roraima can be included in the SIN and achieve good investments in the energy sector with the inclusion of the Tacutu Basin blocks in the concession auction

According to the ANP, preliminary studies indicate the possibility of discoveries of oil and natural gas in the region, which could encourage the production of energy by thermoelectric plants.

Currently, the state of Roraima is the only one that is not yet participating in the SIN, causing heavy damage to the electric power sector in the region.

In 2013, researchers from the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) found black shales in the sedimentary basin of the Tacutu River, and this material is a strong indication that there is an oil reservoir in the region.

Research was conducted over the following years, confirming strong evidence of the existence of oil and natural gas deposits in the Tacutu Basin region.

In 2020, a study carried out by the Federal University of Roraima, on the possibility of having oil and natural gas in the geological basin of the Tacutu River, was accredited by the ANP.

In this way, all research was forwarded and focused on attracting investments in the energy sector in the region of Roraima.

Now, the state awaits the ANP's decision regarding the inclusion of the blocks in the permanent concession auction, seeking to expand the state's presence in the national market.
