With the delay in export operations and ships accumulating in the national ports, the scenario for the transport of cargo in the complex worsens and Antaq confirms a worrying bottleneck within the national port sector in this month of May

The new dynamics on export routes within the national port sector are of concern to the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antaq). Last Friday, (13/05), the agency confirmed the accumulation of ships with cargo in national ports and warned of the current scenario of the Port of Santos, which is being the main target in route changes for export due to its efficient infrastructure.

A new bottleneck in export operations at national ports is verified by Antaq and cargo transport now suffers from the accumulation of ships

After a series of meetings with shipowners, port terminals, importers and exporters operating in Brazil, Antaq found a new and worrying bottleneck in cargo transport operations in Brazilian ports. More precisely, export routes are being affected due to the need for changes caused by the delay of activities. Thus, Brazilian ports now suffer from an accumulation of ships waiting for unloading, bringing a series of problems in the logistics of the complexes.

The information was given by the director of Antaq, Flávia Takafashi, who explained that the delay in the routes of ships that carry out exports in Brazil is today the biggest issue in relation to the international traffic of maritime cargo in the national territory. Flávia also pointed out that this scenario is a direct reflection of the cancellations of operations, changes in ship routes and a series of delays in export operations. And, with that, the current scenario of Brazilian ports worries the agency about the capacity to meet this demand.

In addition, a problem that contributed to the worrying situation in national ports was the container crisis seen during the first months of the year. Despite this, this was an issue that has already been minimized and Antaq claims that, currently, this is not the main problem. The issue of changing routes is still the main issue at the ports, since Antaq stated that there were terminals that were registering 90% of delays. This means that only 10% of these export operations were planned, while all the rest were changed at the last minute, causing a backlog of ships in ports.

Port of Santos is one of the main ones affected by changes in export routes and the accumulation of ships for cargo transport

An important point within the current scenario of cargo transportation highlighted by Flávia is that there is a significant increase in stopovers within ports. This happens as a way to get around the logistical problems, but ends up causing an overcrowding of ships that are waiting for these tenders with no forecast for completion. Thus, several ports with a large cargo capacity are being affected and, among them, the main one is the Port of Santos.

The Port of Santos is one of the largest in terms of loading and unloading capacity in Brazil and, with the changes in export routes, many ships end up going to the complex in order to get around the situation. Thus, Flávia states that “Today, speaking of Santos, we can say that it also suffered from the increase in the number of omissions and delays (of ships). But the port complex as a whole, not the specific terminals, tends to always receive a large capacity and have a smaller omission selection”.

Finally, the director of Antaq states that the agency is accumulating the necessary data to take measures regarding the main problems presented within the national port sector and that, soon, it will have measures for the export bottleneck.
