Vega Unit, in São Francisco do Sul, expands production capacity and brings new technologies to Brazil, generating 350 new permanent jobs at ArcelorMittal.
ArcelorMittal inaugurated today (13) the expansion of the Vega Unit, in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina, strengthening its presence in the flat steel sector with an investment of R$ 2 billion. The new factory was designed to meet the growing demand and increase the production capacity of coated and cold-rolled flat steel, increasing from 1,6 million to 2,2 million tons per year.
This expansion is part of the CMC (Cold Mill Complex) Project, which implemented a continuous galvanizing and annealing line, enabling more flexible production and efficient.
With this, ArcelorMittal intends not only to expand its product portfolio, but also to consolidate its presence in the specialty steel market in Brazil. The new plant marks one of the company's main investments in the country, which expects a total of R$25 billion between 2022 and 2028 for expansions, modernizations and sustainable initiatives.

Magnelis Production
In addition to strengthening its presence in the automotive market, ArcelorMittal brought to Brazil the production of Magnelis, an exclusive steel that offers high resistance to corrosion.
According to Jorge Oliveira, CEO of ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América Latina, “this expansion project reflects the Group’s strategic decision to expand production in the country, develop technological and competitive steels and add value to our portfolio”.
Magnelis is ideal for applications in solar energy, agriculture and construction projects, as its coating with zinc, aluminum and magnesium guarantees prolonged protection, even after cuts or drillings in the material.
The new ArcelorMittal factory in Santa Catarina has already generated 350 permanent jobs, increasing the total number of direct jobs at the Vega Unit to 1.300. For Jorge Adelino, Vice President of Operations at ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América Latina, the investment positions the unit at a new competitive level, expanding the mix of high-tech products and ensuring a greater presence in the Brazilian industrial sector.
This is what we need, to add value and export finished products, replace imports and develop Brazilian technology to become technologically independent, generating value for our natural resources…
