After Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI, Elon Musk threatens to remove all branded devices from his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX
Last Monday (10), Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, turned Apple into its new target. In a blunt post on his profile on the social network X, Musk stated that will remove all Apple devices from its companies if technology giant integrates artificial intelligence (AI) from OpenAI to your systems. This announcement was made after Apple revealed the partnership during its annual event, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), according to the Forbes website.
Elon Musk and Apple: a new technological dispute
“If Apple integrates OpenAI into its systems, all devices from this brand will be banned from my companies. This is a security breach that I will not accept,” stated Musk on his X profile. Musk's relationship with OpenAI is complex: he was one of the company's co-founders in 2015 and remained with it until 2018. Since then, Musk has criticized OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing the company of violating privacy concerns.
The tension between Elon Musk and OpenAI is not new. After leaving the company, Musk frequently launched provocations to Altman and criticized the direction OpenAI took. In response, Musk founded his own AI startup, xAI, in July 2023. In March of the same year, he registered X.AI Corp in Nevada. At the end of 2023, this company announced the launch of a chatbot for the social network X, also owned by Musk.

Apple announcements at WWDC
The announcement that triggered Elon Musk's reaction occurred during the opening of WWDC 2024, in Cupertino, California. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, started the event by highlighting the importance of developers to the company. “WWDC is our time to celebrate developers. I hope you are as excited as I am,” said Cook.
The first announcements included news for AppleTV+, Apple Vision Pro, iOS 18, MacOS and other operating systems in the Apple ecosystem. The second part of the event was reserved for AI tools, which will only be available for iPhones with the A17 Pro and A18 chips onwards. This means that only the 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max models and future releases, including the 16 line scheduled for September 2024, will be able to use these new features.
Impacts and reactions
Elon Musk's threat may have serious implications for Apple, given the size and influence of Musk's companies in the technology market. Tesla and SpaceX together employ thousands of Apple devices, and the removal of these devices would deal a significant blow. Furthermore, this dispute highlights the growing concerns with privacy and security in the age of artificial intelligence. Musk, known for his firm stances on these issues, appears willing to use his market power to influence decisions of other large corporations.
