New biomass plants financed by BNDES will bring sustainable electricity to 148 homes in the North region of Brazil

O National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) is one of the national institutions that invests the most in new technologies. It recently announced an investment of R$80 million for the construction of 4 biomass plants for the production of electricity in the state of Roraima. The promise is that this new infrastructure will be able to replace the energy coming from diesel and still avoid the release of almost 3 million tons of greenhouse gases, being highly sustainable.

The new thermoelectric plants will be installed in 2 different municipalities in Roraima: Cantá and Boa Vista. The Bonfim and Cantá plants will be located in the city of Cantá and the Pau Rainha and Santa Luz plants in the city of Boa Vista. This entire infrastructure will be responsible for producing around 40 MW, which is enough to bring electricity to 148 homes. The investment came from the “BNDES Fundo Clima – Renewable Energy Modality”, a project that aims to bring more sustainability to Brazil. Know more!

Biomass will be produced from wood chips and plants in Roraima will share clusters based on BNDES investment

The biomass that will be used in the plants in Roraima will be obtained from wood industry residues, that is, wood chips. For daily electricity generation, it is estimated that around 1 tons of product per day will be required for burning. However, this material will always be removed from reforestation areas, aiming at the continuous and sustainable supply of biomass.

The entire wood generation process will obtain certification under the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standard, which oversee the legality of the process and quality within environmental and social standards. In this way, sustainability will be ensured throughout the chain and will allow production to take place on a large scale, always renewing the raw material.

The plants will share clusters with each other, that is, clusters for generating electricity. The Serra da Lua cluster, located in the city of Cantá, will connect the Bonfim and Cantá thermoelectric plants, while the Jacitara cluster, in Boa Vista, will connect the Pau Rainha and Santa Luz plants. Each cluster will remain 90 kilometers apart from each other and will make it possible to share connection systems, through BNDES financing.

After all, what is biomass and why is it better than diesel in thermoelectric plants?

Biomass is a type of renewable energy obtained from waste found in nature, especially sugarcane bagasse and wood chips. It can also be achieved through the reuse of urban and agricultural waste. It works as a means to produce biofuels and biogas and has become a very important alternative to fossil fuels, such as diesel often used in thermoelectric plants to produce electricity.

Currently, biomass is responsible for 8% of Brazil's energy matrix and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Burning woody material or organic residues to generate electricity is very promising, as it mimics a natural combustion process, emitting less greenhouse gases.
