This Monday (17), the minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho (Republicans), participated in the launch of the first project aimed at producing sustainable aviation fuel.

The ceremony took place at the Itaipu Technological Park, in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná. The initiative, according to the head of the ministry, aims to promote the decarbonization of the airline sector through clean and renewable fuels.

Fuel investment and production

The project will receive an investment of 1,8 million euros of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Production Unit of Renewable Hydrocarbons, located at the Itaipu Binacional facilities, will produce 6kg/day of bio-syncrude.

This is a mixture of hydrocarbons synthesized from biogas and green hydrogen, intended for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Energy transition and sustainability

According to the minister, these investments in sustainable technologies directly reflect the efforts of the government of the President of the Republic Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in promoting the energy transition.

Still according to him, the investment in new energy sources that has been promoted by the Brazilian government is essential for the objectives sought by Brazil in international agreements signed by the country, which has committed to collaborating with the mitigation of the effects of global climate change.

“With these projects, the Brazilian government reinforces its commitment to sustainability and economic development, preparing the country for a greener and more innovative future,” he said.

Technical visit to Foz do Iguaçu airport

Before the launch, Minister Costa Filho carried out a technical visit to Foz do Iguaçu airport. On the occasion, he was accompanied by the National Secretary of Aviation, Tomé Franca, and the president of Infraero, Rogério Barzellay.

Today, the site is undergoing construction. These include adjustments in the areas of runway safety, renovation and expansion of the passenger terminal, and construction of cargo terminals.

According to information from the “G1” portal, the airport concessionaire, CCR, is investing R$270 million in improvements for passengers.

According to the concessionaire, these interventions not only provide more comfort and convenience to tourists, but also have a significant impact on the local economy, generating approximately 250 direct jobs during the construction phase.
