Seeking to reach its goal to become fully sustainable by 2040, BRF closed a contract with Pontoon for the construction of a solar energy park in Ceará
This Thursday (16), the food company BRF announced the closing of a contract with Pontoon for the construction of a solar energy park in the municipalities of Mauriti and Milagres, in Ceará, with an installed capacity of 320 MW. According to the company, the estimated investment in the project is greater than R$ 1 billion and BRF will also directly invest around R$ 50 million. The solar energy park should have its activities started in 2024.

The solar energy park in Ceará will be built in an area of 1.170 hectares, where 600 photovoltaic panels will be installed, which will make the energy generated be used to power all BRF units in the south of the country. The partnership with Intrepid also joins BRF's joint venture that was announced last month with AES Brasil for the production of wind energy at Complexo Cajuína, in Rio Grande do Norte.
In addition to these, there are still other projects in progress, involving integrated producers. In a video conference with journalists, Lorival Luz, president of BRF, stated that the contract with Pontoon will result in an estimated gain of R$ 1,7 billion over the next 15 years, taking into account that it will reduce the purchase of energy in the captive and free markets.

Vinícius Barbosa, vice-president of operations and supplies at the company, pointed out that together, these solar energy operations in Ceará with Pontoon and the wind energy park with AES, can guarantee the generation of energy needed to supply up to two thirds of the company's needs in Brazil. According to the company, the current portfolio and partnerships with other companies will make 88% of the electricity used by BRF come from renewable sources in the country.
In June, the company announced its commitment to leave its greenhouse gas emissions neutral by the year 2040, both in its factory operations and in its production chains.
BRF Closes partnership with AES Brasil
In addition to the partnership with Pontoon for the solar project of its units in Ceará, BRF also entered into a partnership in August with AES Brasil, which will result in the creation of a joint venture. The partnership aims at building a wind power plant at the Cajuína Wind Power Complex, in the state of RN.
The venture will have a capacity to produce 160 MW, of which 80 MW will be sold to BRF through a power purchase and sale agreement that will last for 15 years.
