BYD is moving away from the lithium battery to focus on the foil battery, which can offer electric cars more safety and 50% more efficiency.

Due to its optimized battery structure, BYD claimed that Blade Battery usage is also 50% higher compared to previous products, with its range reaching the same level as ternary lithium batteries. The Chinese company's electric car battery is produced at BYD's FinDreams battery plant located in Bishan District, Chonqing, China.

BYD claims blade battery takes up 60% of package volume

The nearly 1-meter-long battery can reach tolerances of +/- 0,3mm, and the speed and accuracy of single-piece rolling has an efficiency of 0,3s/pieces. This form of lamination comes from the independent development of the Chinese company of eletric cars and its state-of-the-art technologies, which cannot be copied.

During nail penetration tests, the new component did not emit any smoke or fire and its surface temperature reached a maximum of 60°C.

Under the same conditions, the lithium battery exceeded 500ºC and burned instantly. As such, electric cars equipped with the new sheet battery would be much less susceptible to fire when severely damaged.

Why hasn't Tesla acquired the new technology yet?

Despite already testing the new technology, the Tesla still uses thousands of tiny cylindrical battery cells to assemble its complex lithium battery. That's because when the automaker launched the Roadster, in 2008, high energy density battery cells were only available in this format.

Only in 2016, high-density batteries began to be made available in a format pouch. The first electric car to use the blade battery is the BYD Han, which is already commercialized in Brazil. The 65 kWh battery provides the vehicle with a range of 506 km.

Is BYD Han a better alternative than Tesla Model S?

The BYD Han, which can go from 0-100 km/h in just 3,9 seconds, has a cobalt-free blade battery that helps it to be a great electric car and, so far, a better alternative to the Tesla Model S .

However, it is important to highlight that Tesla's multibillionaire, Elon Musk, is already working on a new diamond battery and nuclear power which can last much longer than the vehicle itself.
