The construction of Petrobras' wind farm with Equinor is still in the development phase by the companies, and the forecast is that the project will match the Itaipu plant in energy production

Equinor, together with Petrobras, is projecting the construction of an offshore wind farm (on the high seas) that will have a production capacity of energy equivalent to that of the Itaipu plant. The announcement was made during an event that took place in Houston, in the United States, according to the Yahoo Finance website.

The Petrobras project with Equinor will be under analysis until the year 2028 and, if after that time everything goes as planned, the wind farm will have 7 wind power generation plants with a generation capacity of 14,5 gigawatts. According to Jean Paul Prates, president of Petrobras: "What we are announcing here today is an Itaipu powered by wind (energy)."

According to an estimate by Petrobras, the total value of the energy project could be worth US$ 70 billion, based on the current cost per megawatt of electricity. offshore wind energy by the expected energy production capacity.

Offshore energy production

According to Prates, energy production in Petrobras' offshore field with Equinor could take 6 to 10 years to start, and investments in the venture are already being contemplated in Petrobras' business plans.

According to Verônica Coelho, president of Equinor, investments in the offshore wind energy venture are worth billions of dollars because it is a large project that needs a lot of research.

Petrobras and Equinor stated that the decision regarding who will operate the offshore energy field will be done soon, with actions focused in wind research. With that, the two companies signed a letter of intent, according to a statement released to the market.

The partnership between Petrobras and Equinor

The offshore wind energy project developed by Petrobras and Equinor is part of a partnership that was signed between them in 2018.

The scope of the survey among the companies was increased to more than the two wind farms Aracatu I and II, which are located on the border of the coast between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

The agreement between the companies also provides for the assessment of the feasibility of offshore wind farms in Piauí, in Manguara; in Ceará, in Colibri and in Ibitucatu; and also in Atobá and Ibituassu, in Rio Grande do Sul. In total, there are 7 projects for offshore wind energy parks with a term of validity until the year 2028.
