After presenting an increase in Ebitda, CBA already plans to invest in its bauxite project, in Pará and to resume with the aluminum production sector in São Paulo, with an investment of R$ 2 billion in each project

After showing an increase of 1.900% in Ebitda to R$ 397 million in the second quarter, Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA), is already preparing new investments for the coming years. In total, the company will invest R$ 4 billion until 2025 in an increase in aluminum production capacity at its unit in São Paulo and also in the exploration of bauxite in Pará.

According to Ricardo Carvalho, president of CBA, resources will be divided equally for each segment. The bauxite production project in the municipality of Rondon do Pará (PA) still needs long-term contracts or an investment partner for it to become real.

Carvalho states that the company already has all the previous licenses granted and is already in the project feasibility stage. The expectation is to define how this project will be in Pará until the end of 2022. The executive claims that those who consume the most of the product would be China and other countries in the Middle East.

The Pará project has an estimated capacity of 18 million tons of bauxite per year and plans to meet the demand in these markets, even competing with producers in Guinea, Africa.

CBA extracted 2,11 million tons of bauxite in 2019

According to the Brazilian Aluminum Association (Abal), bauxite production was approximately 31 million tons in Brazil in 2019. CBA extracted 2,11 million tons of this volume. Carvalho says that the expectation is that 4,5 million tons are produced per year at the Pará unit, with the possibility of expanding production until it reaches 18 million.

The executive also points out that the planned investments are for the entire bauxite project in Pará and considers the development of the mine and the logistics part. He claims that the company is already talking to VLI, which manages the Carajás railroad. A terminal will be built at the Port of Itaqui, in Maranhão, for the export of the material, however, this is still under analysis.

R$ 2 billion in aluminum investments in São Paulo

Another CBA front is aluminum production, where the company will invest another R$ 2 billion in the production and recycling of the material. The primary aluminum production plan represents the return of material capacity in Brazil.

According to the executive, CBA will connect aluminum furnaces 1 and 3, in São Paulo and currently has a capacity to produce 350 tons per year, but with the investment, another 80 tons will be added to production.

This capacity should occur, also by 2025, but in a staggered way. The executive points out that Furnace Room 3 should be back up and running by the end of next year. It is also worth remembering that to resume production of primary aluminum, CBA must invest in renewable energy generation, where the company generates 1,4 gigawatts and consumes 700 megawatts.
