The Lightsource company that is part of the BP group will invest BRL 1,4 billion in two solar energy parks in Ceará

“There will be two solar energy parks in the regions of Ceará, one of which will be implemented in Milagres with a capacity of 202 MW. The other will be in the municipality of Icó, with a capacity of 265 MW”, highlighted the secretary to Focus. He informed that the first plant to start operating is in Milagres as early as 2022. Representatives of the company that is part of the BP Group met with the head of Sedet, Maia Júnior, to settle the details.

The government of Ceará ensures that the construction of new solar energy parks should continue, as well as the repair operations of transmission and generation services. The announcement came in response to a query made by the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (ABSOLAR) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even on April 2, the State Government signed a letter with the entity pledging to ensure that the sector's production chain continues to operate.

Solar energy grows 170% in Ceará despite the pandemic and expects a positive 2021

The number of units in Ceará generating their own energy through sunlight more than doubled in 2020, compared to 2019, according to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). Last year, the state registered more than 10 micro and mini solar energy generating units, while in 2019 these units totaled 4,3. The advance was 130,8%.

According to Aneel, installed power increased from 66,9 GigaWatts (GW) to 156,7 GW in one year. The energy generated throughout last year was used by 12,7 properties, 136% more than in 2019 (5,4).

The solar energy industry is overjoyed. She managed to break records in 2020, while some sectors of the economy struggled because of the pandemic. The installation of solar panels grew 70% last year, generating 7,5 gigawatts – which represents almost half of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant.

Lightsource is part of the BP Group and already operates in more than 300 projects in the renewable market

Lightsource, which is part of the BP Group, operates in more than 300 solar energy projects in its portfolio. The idea is to supply 2023 gigawatts (GW) globally by the year 10.

Lightsource BP's team comprises 500 industry experts, active in 13 countries. In Brazil, it has approximately 2 GW of solar projects in different stages of development. Based in São Paulo, the company works with companies and communities to develop projects that generate clean energy in a sustainable and local way.

In 2018, Lightsource was victorious in the 6th Federal Energy Auction (A-4). Competing against a consortium contract with Enerlife, Lightsource BP has been awarded a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to deliver over 200 MW of solar power by January 2023.
