Imagine being on a bridge so long you can drive for hours without seeing the end. China is now home to the world's longest bridge, the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge. This incredible structure cost 8,5 billion dollars and stretches an impressive 164,8 km, connecting five cities in China.

Before the construction of the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, traveling in China's eastern coastal region, especially between major cities such as Shanghai and Nanjing, was a major challenge. The region's geography, with its low-lying rice fields and extensive network of rivers, lakes, and canals, made railway construction a difficult task. The soft, silt-heavy soil not ideal for stable structures, especially a high-speed railway.

To solve these problems, China decided to build an elevated bridge, creating a stable, high-quality railway line that does not interfere with the delicate soil or local communities and their farmland.

Construction of the world's longest bridge in China began in April 2006 and was completed in June 2011

The project in China required an investment of around 8,5 billion dollars, with an approximate cost of 51 million dollars per kilometer. The bridge is a viaduct structure made up of several interconnected sections, designed to overcome the unique challenges of the Yangtze River Delta's varied terrain.

The bridge uses more than 4.000 prestressed concrete beams, reinforced with high-tension steel wires to support immense loads. These beams ensure the integrity of the bridge under the weight of high-speed trains. The bridge also incorporates advanced earthquake and typhoon resistant technologies such as base isolators, elastomeric bearings and skid plates that allow for controlled lateral movements during seismic events.

The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge connects the major cities of Shanghai and Nanjing along the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail line

Making it possible to travel 1.000 km between Beijing and Shanghai in China in less than five hours. This bridge significantly reduces travel time between Ningbo and Jiaxing from 4,5 hours to about two hours, improving daily travel, business and general connectivity of the region.

In addition to improving transportation, the bridge plays a crucial role in the economic development of the southern Jiangsu region, a vibrant area that contributes significantly to China's total import and export volume.

The opening of the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge marks a milestone in global engineering and transportation, showcasing China's ability to overcome complex technical challenges and boost its economic growth with innovative infrastructure.
