Have you ever imagined watching a movie on big screens using solar energy? This is Cinesolar's proposal, a movie theater entirely powered by renewable energy that has held more than a thousand sessions in 440 Brazilian cities
The Cinesolar project arrived in Paraíba this month with activities carried out in João Pessoa and Campina Grande. The initiative offered the screening of films using solar energy, and the event also featured artistic workshops. The exhibitions took place on Sunday, in Campina Grande, and on Monday (24), in João Pessoa. Cinesolar screened Brazilian short films and the feature films “Rio” and “Mogli – O Menino Lobo”. The project is the first traveling cinema in Brazil to be powered by clean and renewable energy, in this case, solar energy, and has been in circulation since 2013.

The focus of Cinesolar is to bring art to more remote communities, which experience difficulties in accessing cultural facilities in cities. In addition to the cinema sessions, in the city of João Pessoa, the project presented the Solar Workshop, a video workshop focused on sustainability for children and young people. As a result of this activity, a film was produced with the participants and shown during the film session for the local community.
The solar-powered cinema event took place in person, complying with all the health protocols required by the Health Department in relation to the pandemic.

Gel alcohol was offered for hand hygiene and there was also access control and distance between chairs. In addition, it was also mandatory to wear a mask throughout the exhibition period.
Cinema powered by solar energy has held more than a thousand sessions
On the 23rd, Cinesolar was in Campina Grande, at Praça Jornalista Evandro Barros, in Bairro Pedregal. On the 24th, film screenings arrived in the capital, with workshops at Escola Viva Olho do Tempo, in Gramame.
The sessions took place in the same place. In total, cinema powered by solar energy has already shown more than a thousand sessions, including short films, with socio-environmental themes, and feature films, in 440 cities in the country. More than 300 workshops were given, providing basic techniques and the elements that are part of the cinematographic language.
Understand how Cinesolar works
The cinema powered by solar energy has two sprinters equipped with solar energy panels and an energy converter system that offers an autonomy of approximately 20 hours of activities.
Inside the "vans", chairs for the public, projector, sound system, among others, are also taken. Once removed, the space becomes a classroom with a permanent exhibition of technology and science. The first Cinesolar unit was named Tupí, a tribute to the Brazilian indigenous peoples, and the second unit was named Mahura, which tells stories of ancestors coming from Africa.
In all, with the use of solar energy alone, the initiative has already saved around 2.317 kW, and has already reached 197.468 people with its events. Workshops such as Eco-Graphite are also worked on, a graphite that uses natural pigments; Forno Solar, which shares production technology lessons; among several other workshops.
