With a length of 2.160 km, the Central-East Corridor promises to transform Brazilian logistics, generating jobs and integrating strategic regions.

A railway that will revolutionize Brazil! The Central-East Corridor will connect regions, create thousands of jobs and move 28 million tons of cargo per year. Discover how this megastructure will change the future of Brazilian transportation!

Have you ever imagined an infrastructure project capable of connecting strategic regions of Brazil, generating thousands of jobs and still revolutionize national logistics?

That is exactly what is about to happen in a Brazilian state, with the construction of a colossal railway that promises to have a significant impact on the country.

The numbers are impressive and the economic impact is gigantic, but the details of this ambitious project go much further.

As presented at a public hearing held at Palรกcio Anchieta, in Espรญrito Santo, the Central-East Corridor is one of the most ambitious projects underway in Brazil.

With works scheduled to begin in 2026, the plan is to create a 2.160-kilometer railway network, connecting the north of Espรญrito Santo to the Central-West region.

The project, led by the Petrocity group, will not only facilitate cargo transportation but will also generate around 6 direct jobs during construction, with peaks that could reach 20 vacancies in certain phases.

The dimension of the project

The Central-East Corridor includes four railway sections already authorized by the federal government, with two of these routes receiving a Declaration of Public Utility (DUP), allowing the expropriations necessary for their implementation.

According to Petrocity, the planned lines are:

  • EF 456/030: Connects Sรฃo Mateus (ES) to Ipatinga (MG) โ€“ 431,3 km.
  • EF030: Connects Barra de Sรฃo Francisco (ES) to Brasilia (DF) โ€“ 1.188 km.
  • EF A20: Railway between Corumbรก de Goiรกs and Anรกpolis (GO) โ€“ 67,9 km.
  • EF355: Railway from Brasilia (DF) to Mara Rosa (GO) โ€“ 452 km.

Railways will play a crucial role in the integration of productive regions, connecting logistics centers and ports, such as the future Petrocity port in Urussuquara, Sรฃo Mateus (ES).

The total investment is R$28 billion, of which R$23,5 billion will be allocated to railway works and the remainder to the port.

Job creation and economic impact

According to Josรฉ Roberto Barbosa da Silva, president of the Petrocity group, the construction of the railways will require the hiring of around 6 workers directly, in addition to another 2 indirectly.

During the peak of the works, vacancies can reach 20 thousand, distributed among the four railway sections.

In operation, scheduled to begin in 2031, the project would employ 1.787 professionals directly, including roles such as machinists, maintenance technicians and operators in control centers.

The railway is expected to move 28 million tons of cargo in its first year of operation.

Cutting-edge infrastructure and sustainability

In addition to the tracks, the project includes the implementation of 11 dry ports along the railway, two of which are located in Espรญrito Santo: one in Sรฃo Mateus and the other in Barra de Sรฃo Francisco.

These terminals will allow the transshipment of goods and facilitate the transportation of agro-mineral products.

The dry ports will act as logistics hubs, enabling not only the sending of cargo to the port of Urussuquara, but also transportation between regions served by the railway.

This should improve Brazil's internal logistics, offering an efficient alternative to existing bottlenecks in road transport.

Challenges and political support

During the public hearing, the governor Renato Casagrande highlighted that the project is essential to integrate Espรญrito Santo with other regions of the country.

โ€œEverything that depends on the government will be done to make this initiative viable,โ€ he said. Vice-Governor Ricardo Ferraรงo classified the railway as strategic not only for the state, but for the whole of Brazil, highlighting its contribution to resolving the national logistical bottleneck.

However, Senator Zequinha Marinho highlighted an obstacle: the delay in environmental authorizations, conducted by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment (Ibama).

According to him, the country currently has 108 requests for authorization for railways, but only 45 have been approved.

A vision for the future

The construction of the railways also aims to integrate the national railway network. This means that the new lines will not operate in isolation, but will connect with existing railways, allowing for more efficient freight transport.

The expectation is to create a link between the Central-West and the ports of Espรญrito Santo, consolidating Espรญrito Santo as a logistics hub.

With completion scheduled for 2031, both the railway and the port are expected to operate in tandem, offering an integrated solution for the transportation of goods.

This is especially relevant for agribusiness and mining, sectors that depend on efficient infrastructure to remain competitive.

The issue of funding

To make the project viable, Petrocity signed memorandums of understanding with two investment funds and is seeking tax incentives that could reduce the total cost by up to R$8 billion.

The search for financial partners reflects the complexity and magnitude of the initiative, which also has the challenge of guaranteeing returns to investors.

Question to the reader

With so many challenges and promises, do you believe that the Central-East Corridor will fulfill its role of transforming freight transportation in Brazil and generating jobs? Or could bureaucratic obstacles delay this dream? Share your opinion!

It could be a big deception in the form of a paper railroad, since in those regions there are already other private railroads and the cargo that is left is minimal.

It will certainly be a step forward for the future of the railway network in Brazil.
