Construction of the Port of Jacone: Investment under Debate

The construction of the Port of Jacone, an investment of almost BRL 2,5 billion for Maricá (RJ), has faced resistance from the so-called “environmentalist dictatorship”, which alleges the presence of important sedimentary rocks in the region. To discuss this topic, the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy (Crea-RJ) will hold a public hearing at its headquarters, in downtown Rio, with specialists, professors and representatives from different sectors to discuss the social and environmental impacts of the project with a huge investment.

The Port of Jacone, officially named Terminals de Ponta Negra (TPN), is considered the largest private project in the region, with the forecast of generating 4 thousand direct jobs and up to 12 thousand indirect jobs with investments. Its construction, located on Jaconé Beach, aims to become the main anchor for the flow and storage of pre-salt oil produced in the region.

Pros and cons of building the Port of Jacone

The public hearing organized by Crea-RJ will allow for discussion between supporters and opponents of the construction of the Port of Jacone. The positive aspects of the investment will be analyzed, such as job and income generation, in addition to the social and environmental impacts. Specialists will discuss issues related to safety, urban mobility and environmental impacts, such as possible risks of ship accidents and sea pollution, affecting fisheries and tourism.

The region chosen to house the port is characterized by the presence of important sedimentary rocks, known as beachrocks. The possible allocation of these rocks by the construction of the Port of Jacone is one of the points of concern raised by the opponents of the project. In addition, issues related to safety, urban mobility and preservation of the environment will also be discussed during the public hearing.

Future prospects and investments

The Terminais de Ponta Negra (TPN) project started in 2011, when DTA Engenharia acquired the area at Praia de Jacone. After obtaining the necessary licenses, the company was authorized to start work in February this year. In addition, a resolution to build a freight railroad was published in the Official Gazette in May, aiming to connection of the Port of Jacone to the national railway network. The total investment is estimated at approx. BRL 2,45 billion.

Finally, it is evident that the construction of the Port of Jacone is an investment that arouses heated debates about the social and environmental impacts in the region. While defenders point to the generation of jobs and the economic development, opponents raise questions about environmental preservation and risks associated with the project.

The public hearing promoted by Crea-RJ is an opportunity to analyze the pros and cons of this investment, seeking a balance between development and preservation. The decision on the future construction of the Port of Jacone will depend on a careful analysis of the impacts involved and the search for sustainable solutions for the growth of the region.
