A crisis threatens Brazilian postal services: companies subcontracted by Correios have not received payments for weeks and are already considering completely stopping deliveries

A group of 31 carriers that provide services to the Brazilian Post Office are threatening to suspend their operations. The reason is the lack of payment by the state-owned company.

The companies claim that the payments have not been made regularly. In a letter sent to the president of the Post Office, Fabiano Silva dos Santos, they demand payment of the outstanding amounts.

The document was sent on Thursday (20). The original deadline for payment was Monday (24), but there was a 72-hour extension.

According to the letter, there is a failure to comply with the deadlines set out in the contract.Payments are not being regular, according to reports from each company in particular”, says the document.

Post Office admits technical problem

In a statement, the Post Office acknowledged that there was a technical problem with payments. The state-owned company reported that the payments are already being made. It also assured that deliveries continue normally throughout the country.

"The Post Office faced a technical problem in paying some suppliers, but payments are already being made. It is important to note that deliveries throughout the country were not affected and are taking place normally.”, says the official text.

Historic deficit worsens crisis

The companies' charges come amid a financial crisis. In 2024, federal state-owned companies recorded a deficit of R$6,7 billion. The Post Office leads this deficit, with a loss of R$3,2 billion, according to data from the Central Bank.

In light of the situation, Congressman Zé Vitor (PL-MG) requested the creation of a Temporary External Committee in the Chamber. The idea is to monitor the deficit in state-owned companies and propose measures to improve the management of public resources.
