Cummins recently introduced its new 15 liter hydrogen engine that promises to be the sustainable future of vehicles in the automotive market. Mass production will start in mid-2027

Cummins Inc. presented its new 15-liter hydrogen engine to the automotive market this Tuesday (11). The presentation took place in Long Beach, California, during the Advanced Clean Transportn. According to the company, the X15H engine is part of a new fuel independent platform from Cummins. This version is scheduled for mass production by 2027 and combines sustainable hydrogen fuel with zero carbon.

New Cummins hydrogen engine can deliver 290 hp of power

According to Cummins Inc Engine Business President Srikanth Padmanabhan, the company has set important targets as part of its sustainability strategy through 2050, including a goal of zero emissions. According to the company, the plan has quantifiable goals for the next decade and visionary long-term aspirations for 2050.

The first tests of the hydrogen engine were carried out by Cummins in July last year and the company claims that the initial results were impressive, reaching all production torque and power targets.

The torque achieved was greater than 111 kgfm and 290 horsepower. According to the company, the additional tests on the prototypes of the hydrogen engine more advanced ones will start soon. Cummins' goal is to leverage its extensive global manufacturing presence to scale production in the automotive market faster.

Cummins announces other technologies in California

Cummins believes that the use of vehicles powered by a hydrogen engine can be driven by high technology maturity, extended vehicle range, low initial cost, uniformity of powertrain installation, easy fueling and end-user familiarity.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the hydrogen-powered engine for the automotive market, the company also exhibited other technologies that can contribute to the reduction in polluting gas emissions such as the X15N, an engine that offers reduced size and weight compared to diesel, in addition to almost identical torque and power curves. Built on 30 years of experience manufacturing natural gas engines, this solution begins production in the US in 2024.

The B6.7 Propane engine, also introduced by the company, is the industry's first medium-duty turbocharged spark-ignition platform for propane fuels. Building on the legacy of Cummins' legendary B-series, it delivers diesel-like performance and durability. 

Yamaha and Toyota develop hydrogen engine for the automotive market

After developing a Alliance with other Japanese automakers, Toyota and Yamaha produced the first V8 hydrogen engine with a capacity of 5 liters. According to Yoshihiro Hidaka, President of Yamaha Motor, the company has acted to achieve neutrality in carbon emissions by 2050.

The executive points out that the word “Engine” is in his company's name due to the strong passion and commitment level with engines powered by internal combustion.

It is important to emphasize that the company used the LC-F and LC500 engines as a basis, developing new heads, injection system and intake manifolds, resulting in an engine that provides 455,5 horsepower and 55,1 kgfm for the automotive market.
