BMW luxury SUV in the R$60 range? Meet the used BMW X1 SUV, which has been gaining prominence in the used car market. Is it still worth buying in 2024?

Launched in 2009, the BMW X1 luxury SUV inaugurated the curious “entry-level premium SUV” segment, dominating even the arrival of competitors such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. Now, the used BMW X1 is gaining prominence in the used car market. In this article, we will go into detail about this BMW SUV and whether it is still worth buying in 2024.

A little about the history of the BMW X1 SUV

The most successful version of BMW's first-generation luxury SUV was the sDrive18i, which sold well until 2014. Its biggest attraction is the brand's typical dynamic behavior, thanks to the weight well distributed between the axles, the high torsional rigidity and the suspensions, multi-link at the front and double A at the rear. The brakes of the BMW X1 SUV are efficient and the steering is communicative.

It's such a well-tuned set that it further highlights the lack of power of the N46 engine, a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 150 horsepower and 20,4 kgfm of torque. What helps is the six-speed sequential automatic transmission, decisive for packing its 1.455 kg.

There is no sunroof, parking sensors or rear view camera. The equipment level is limited to analogue air conditioning, multifunction steering wheel and leather seats (with manual adjustments). The xDrive28i version had two engine options. Between 2010 and 2012 there was the N52, a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder with 258 hp.

What is the best version of the used BMW X1 SUV?

The best cost/benefit of the BMW SUV is with sDrive20i, presented along with the discreet restyling in 2013. Its N20 engine is a four-cylinder turbo with 184 horsepower 27,5 kgfm constant between 1.250 and 4.500 RPM.

The eight-speed automatic transmission defines a much superior performance package. It goes further, has lower fuel consumption and is much better equipped, with cruise control, parking sensors, electrically adjustable seats, digital air conditioning and 18-inch wheels.

The most desired options on the used BMW X1 SUV are the GP package (GPS, DVD and iDrive interface) and the sunroof.

The power remained unchanged in the engine 2.0 ActiveFlex, the main new feature of the 2015 model. If the objective is performance, there is nothing better than the xDrive28i version, since its greatest attribute is the all-wheel drive, which electronically distributes the torque between the axles, with 40% for the front and 60% for the rear.

However, when purchasing a BMW SUV, it is important to check the maintenance history. All versions require qualified labor and specific tools. Therefore, it is worth noting that a small overhaul with original parts can easily reach R$20 thousand.

Main defects of the used BMW X1

The N46 engine in the sDrive18i version is notorious for drying out valve seals, identified by smoke at idle caused by the burning of lubricating oil.

The repair cost ranges from R$9 in independent workshops to R$17 at dealerships. Another chronic engine problem is oil leakage through the valve cover gasket, vacuum pump rings and rotation sensor flange.

The gearbox requires fluid replacement every 80 thousand km. The service is often neglected due to the high cost, which can total R$8 thousand. The electrical system also tends to malfunction and depends on a battery that is within specifications. Batteries that are outside of the parameters overload the alternator and cause a series of electrical failures.

It's a good car, but used, it will depend on the origin and recommended maintenance.

Is it worth paying for the maintenance of a 15-year-old imported car? Does this type of report mislead anyone?

Many people don't know, and often the person's status and ego are stronger. Premium, used cars are a headache for the owner when they go into a garage. I'm not referring to basic maintenance, which many don't even do, but rather to unexpected, high-cost problems that make corrective maintenance impossible for these people.

Dude, it's true... I have a 320 2014i that is a rarity, less than 66 thousand km... it has never given me any problems. But I do the maintenance regularly (outside the authorized service center). But everything from the brand is a knife... in fact, any German... be it BMW, Mercedes or Audi. When I get rid of my BMW I will definitely go back to the S10 that I should never have gotten rid of.
